No surprise: Jones County's Leonard defends Class 5A XC title

          Of the potential for suspense, there wasn’t much Friday in the GHSA girls cross country state meet in Class 5A.

          Erin Leonard was competing.

          And she easily defended her state title with a time of 18:43.74, topping Megan Uszynski of team state champ McIntosh, who ran a 19.31.53 at Carrollton.

          Veterans’ Mackenzie Walls was sixth (19:50.44) in Class 5A girls. Jones County’s Laney Doster was 14th (20:13.02).

          Leonard won last year by a little more than a half-minute.

          The Greyhounds finished eighth and the Warhawks 12th.

          Veterans’ Aamiri Ducksworth was 23rd in Class 5A boys (17:47.321), helping the Warhawks to an eighth-place finish. Warner Robins was 20th

          Mount de Sales’ Seth Brahmey was the top boys finisher, taking 31st (18:44.90). FPD was 13th in Class A private boys.

          FPD’s Mia Ferro finished 53rd in Class A private girls, the Vikings finishing 16th, two spots behind Stratford.

          Other team winners Friday: Class 5A girls and boys, McIntosh; Class A private boys, Hebron Christian; Class A private girls, Landmark Christian.

          Action begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday with Class 2A boys and then girls, followed by (boys then girls) Class 3A, 4A, 6A and A public. The final race is scheduled for 2:45 p.m.
