Officiating is not off to a good start.
Missing calls is understandable. Refs don't see the same game people not on the field see. But managing the game, marking off penalties properly, clearly making the calls, and just ref chemistry have been struggles in the two games these eyes have seen, Northside-Warner Robins and Peach County-Houston County.
And it's adding time to games. ...
Perry is 1-0, which isn't necessarily news. The Panthers have won a fair share of openers, which is easier when the first opponent isn't Peach County or Northside, which has been the case much of the past decade.
Rutland may be a struggling AAA team, but Perry putting up points and stopping another team is notable.
Of course, up next, after a week off, is Peach County, No. 1 for Georgia Sports Writers Association and the AJC.
Perry hasn't beaten Peach County since 2007, winning 48-28 at Peach County in Chad Campbell's first season. Since then, five games have been decided by more than 21, four by less than 21, including the surprisingly close 13-6 Trojans win in 2015.
Peach County will be off games against Houston County and Warner Robins when the Panthers visit. And this will be the most anticipated meeting, certainly from Perry's side, in awhile. ...
I do kinda like Georgia Southern to cover against Auburn.
The Tigers are yet again breaking in a quarterback, and the Eagles are back to the option.
Might be much more interesting for awhile than 35 points. ...
Houston County lost to Peach County by 30 points, which isn't impressive.
But note special teams gave Peach County some easy points, and then poor defensive fundamentals after one of those special teams errors led to more.
The Trojans got two points on a safety after a botched an early second-quarter punt snap deep in HoCo territory, which was the result of some fascinating officiating. Two plays later, the defense muddled its way through a 53-yard touchdown pass from Antonio Gilbert to Kearis Jackson.
Add the PAT, and that's 10 points in less than a minute. Then came Jackson's 62-yard punt return late in the second quarter.
That made it 30-7 at the half.
The Bears, who desperately need the passing game to develop immediately, were solid in run offense and inconsistent on defense. Plus composure became an issue.
Still, there are those who think the Bears are a serious candidate for an 0-10 season. No doubt they'll be underdogs in pretty much every game, but this week's visit by Eagle's Landing, an 0-1 AAAA school that finished 2-8 last year, offers a quality shot. ...
An "ouch" by way of the Seattle Times' Sideline Chatter:
