Henley eyes rebound at Heritage

One of two things is likely to happen this week for Russell Henley.

Either he’ll miss the cut at the RBC Heritage, or he’ll be in contention almost all weekend.

Henley will try to straighten what went crooked at the Masters when he and 71 other players get going at the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head.

Henley is fifth in the FedExCup rankings and seventh in the Official World Golf ranking.

He tees off Thursday at 9:55 a.m., with 19th-ranked Tom Hoge.

Henley has finished tied for 12th and for 19th in his last two visits, and tied for ninth in 2021. His worst finish is tied for 26th.

Conversely, Henley has missed five cuts in 11 tries, almost half. Only one time, though, was it a bad weekend, back in 2014 when he was 12 over. In the other four misses, Henley is a total of only 1 over.

He shot below 70 in all four rounds last year.

Henley had a roller coaster Masters, roughing up the course with a first-round birdie-free 79. Perhaps just as surprising, he rebounded in a big way with – after a bogey on No. 1 – a solid second round.

He was all set to improbably make the cut, but was sabotaged into a bogey after finding sand on his second shot followed by a so-so approach that left him a 19-footer for birdie, on which he came up 10 inches short.

Mount de Sales’ pitcher Holden Lane signed to play baseball at Morehouse. Julia Bonbrake is joining Ave Maria for volleyball, Levi Thomas is going south to Thomas for baseball, while Drew Bentley will play men’s golf at GMC JC and Taylor Jones will suit up for East Georgia State College for softball.

ACE Charter grad Gavin West has signed with Ohio State to play baseball, after two seasons at Gordon State.

Warner Robins’ Sydnee McAbee has signed to play softball at East Georgia State, and Gabe Jacobs is headed to North Florida to play men’s basketball.

WR/S Ji’Kayla Marshall is Westside’s first flag football college signee, with Division II Mount Olive, a member of Conference Carolinas. Ki’Moiray Holland-Stephens is headed to Erskine for football, Titiana Johnson to Wesleyan for volleyball. Christian Little signed with Coastal Alabama for men’s basketball, Joshua Harden signing with Gordon State.

Stratford’s David Garnett has signed to wrestle at Brewton-Parker, while Kaliya Walker is moving to LaGrange for women’s basketball.
