Tattnall loses heartbreaker state championship game in extra innings on walkoff homer

Reece Holbrook got the scoring going for Wesleyan in the first, and she finished the scoring, in style.
Holbrook belted a solo homer to center with two outs to lift Wesleyan to a 5-4 win in eight innings Saturday over Tattnall in the GHSA Class A private softball championship.
Tattnall lost to Wesleyan Friday and then beat ELCA to reach Saturday’s championship round, and then won the first game 3-0 to force the finale
Tattnall scored four in the top of the third for the lead in the championship game.
Allie Gordon followed singles by Jaelyn Darley and Grace Hiller with an RBI double. Then Ashleigh Morton hit a two-run double to left, the final run coming in on Carley Ingle’s sacrifice fly to center.
Morton got on a roll and retired 10 straight after Holbrook’s homer in the first.
But Wesleyan tied it with two in the fifth on a two-out single.
Tattnall got a one-out runner in the top of the seventh and Wesleyan went down in order in the bottom half.
The Trojans, who outhit the Wolves by three, were retired 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh, and Morton got two outs before Holbrook’s heroics.
Morton struck out three and walked one, while Wesleyan used to pitchers to fan 10 with two walks, and strand six Trojan runners. Gordon and Kenna epps had two hits each for Tattnall.
In the first game Saturday, Morton struck out four with no walks and allowed six hits in the shutout.
The Trojans got enough with two in the third when Hiller drilled a full-count homer to left to bring in Logan Childs. Tattnall added a run in the sixth on Courtney Ball’s homer.
Morton got an inning-ending double play in the second, and then escaped a two-hit sixth, retiring the side in order in the fifth and seventh.
The Trojans won their way in late, late Friday and early Saturday, with the game against ELCA starting around 11.
Tattnall trailed 1-0 after one, but scored 3, 2, and 6 runs in innings 3-5 for the win, the game ending a little before 1 a.m.
Monticello was unable to force a second game, falling 9-7 to Rockmart in the AA championship. The Hurricanes were down 7-4 after four innings.
The only other classes with a second championship game were in 6A and 4A.
