Northside ekes out playoff win at Brunswick, Southwest season ends

Kentrez Anthony came up with the season-saving interception at the  goal line with less than 30 seconds left to preserve Northside's 24-21 win Saturday night over host Brunswick in a GHSA Class 6A first-round playoff game.

The Eagles pulled ahead with 2:10 left on a 43-yard touchdown pass from Marcus Jolly to Kobie Phillips, and Cory Munson's PAT. It was the fourth team the Eagles took the lead.

This time, they didn't lose it.

Jolly put Northside up 7-0 with a 7-yard run early in the first quarter, and Brunswick tied it early in the second only for the Eagles' Eric Smith to return the kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown.

Brunswick tied it again on a short run, and the teams were tied at 14 at halftime.

Munson's 39-yard field goal  with 3:10 left in the third put Northside up, but Brunswick took its first lead midway through the fourth quarter.

After the Eagles re-took the lead with their only pass completion of the night, Brunswick moved downfield and then got a pass interference call against Northside to reach the 7, setting up Anthony's heroics.

Northside (8-3) won despite giving up 442 yards in total offense on 15 more plays, Brunswick getting 7 yards per play to 4.4 for the Eagles.

Smith had 87 yards rushing for Northside, which is on the road at Tucker in the next round.

Southwest lost 45-14 to Jefferson County in a Class AA first-round game, ending the Patriots’ season.
