Region races are heating up, and jockeying for tournament seeds warms up, too.
And late-season momentum plus rivalry wins are on agendas.
The quality 1-2 showdown for the night takes place in Milledgeville, where Baldwin hosts Burke County in Region 3-AAAA.
On the girls side, Baldwin is a half-game behind Burke County, each with a loss.
Burke County’s boys are 13-5 overall and 6-1 in region play, while Baldwin is 20-2 and 5-1.
Burke County used a strong fourth quarter for a 55-48 win in the first girls meeting.
The Bravettes are on a five-game winning streak since that loss, and are led by Crystal Corley and Akirah Robinson, with MiKaya Waller an inside presence.
Baldwin’s only other loss is to Beach, 66-47 on Jan. 1 at the Big South Shootout in Duluth.
Baldwin got past Burke County 76-68 in the first boys meeting, and the Braves are 16-5 overall and 6-0 in region play. Burke County is 9-7 overall, and is joined by Cross Creek and Hephizibah at 4-3 in the region.
The Braves have won six straight since a non-region 81 -74 loss to Westside on Jan. 6.
Brenden Robertson’s 14.4 points top the Braves, who get 11.9 from Donte Justice and 9 from Torez Hicks. Rodney Walker is tough inside with 6.9 rebounds and 8.4 points.
Top Girls Games
There’s a showdown in Barnesville with the top two teams in Region 5-AA, leader Lamar County hosting second place Callaway.
On the other hand, Lamar County is 15-6 overall while Callaway is 6-10 overall. The Trojans, winners of seven straight, have revenge in mind, recalling the 47-46 loss to Callaway on Jan. 5. Tomiyah Alford had 25 in that game, but the Trojans didn’t have much offense otherwise.
Sixth-ranked Stratford tries to stay unbeaten in 7-A play when it welcomes Tattnall, which has only two region losses.
Top Boys Games
Dublin has a solid lead in Region 3-AA, three losses ahead of Bleckley County, which hosts the Irish.
Dublin (16-2/6-1) was down 27-14 after one in the first meeting, at home, but controlled the final three quarters for a 73-59 win on Jan. 19. The Royals didn’t get much offense after Mykel Anderson’s 17 points.
Hancock Central and Warren County are next to each other in the 7-A standings, in fifth and sixth places, and only a game apart in overall records.
