Braves call up Acuna, announces Sun Trust expa - no, but Acuna made his MLB debut

          There was substantial hyperventilating among those connected in any form or fashion with the Atlanta Braves.

          Atlanta Hawks head coach Mike Budenholzer appeared to be in the job market. Now, he really is, having parted ways with the Hawks.

 

 

Bibb County high school athletes earn Al Lucas scholarships

          Seven Bibb Countians celebrated scholarship money from the Al Lucas Memorial Scholarship fund in a gather at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.

          Since the start, the Community Foundation of Central Georgia has handed out nearly 100 scholarships in the name of Al Lucas.

          That group added seven Wednesday in a ceremony at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. The Bibb County student-athletes received $1,000 in scholarship funding.

          Lucas was a Northeast grad who died in 2005 after suffering a spinal injury in an arena football game. Lucas also helped coach at Northeast.

          This year’s recipients:

          Central: Re’Nesha Goolsby

          Howard: Christian Aka

          Northeast: Russell Hill III and Alexus Norringtn

          Rutland: JaMaizia Wallace

          Southwest: Isaiah Goolsby

          Westside: Etta James

          Good news came Wednesday for teams on the top half of brackets in spring sports.

          When two teams with the same seeds are set to play in a quarterfinal, the team on the top half of the bracket will be at home.

Falcons pick up option with Beasley

          Atlanta picked up the fifth-year option on defensive end Vic Beasley, keeping him under contract through the 2019 season.

 

College Baseball: Different day, different locale, familiar result for Georgia over Tech

          Aaron Schunk went 4-for-5 to lead Georgia’s 14-hit offense to an 8-3 win over Georgia Tech at Russ Chandler Stadium.

          The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday at SunTrust Park.

 

College Baseball: No. 12 Georgia College rolls at home

          The Bobcats had the offense going in cruising past Clark Atlanta 18-5 in seven innings.

          Garrett Green went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI to lead the Bobcats, who got 6-hit pitching from six pitchers.

          West Laurens infielder and pitcher Guy Anderberg has signed with Georgia Southwestern of the Peach Belt Conference.

          Former Stratford standout Mary Wilson Avant is having a season with Georgia, and is the latest SEC softball pitcher of the week.

          Avant went 3-0, allowing only 1 run i 18 innings against USC Upstate, and Kentucky. She whiffed a season-high eight against UK with no walks.

          She is 7-1 in 67.2 innings with 60 strikeouts and a .72 ERA. ...

          Middle Georgia State's Margaret Simmons is the latest Southern States Athletic Conference player of the week.

          The freshman from Dodge County batted .350 with 3 HRs in 3 straight games, including a walk-off homer, helping the Knights to a 5-1 record. It's her second honor of the season.
