Macon’s Mayhem didn’t have an identity when Kevin Kerr was named its first head coach, and was still in the process of establishing one when he hired Leo Thomas as an assistant.
Both gave the SPHL team an identity, one of success.
It led to Kerr moving up the minor league ladder to the Greenville Swamp Rabbits of the ECHL, and to his top lieutenant succeeding him, and making history in the process.
Thomas was introduced Wednesday afternoon to replace Kerr, keeping a level of continuity going for the Mayhem while also becoming the first African-American head coach in league history as well as the only current African-American head coach of a North American pro team.

The Mayhem have gone 70-29-13 in the past two seasons with Thomas on board, a span that includes the 2016-17 President’s Cup championship.
The Toronto native is 36, and followed a 13-year playing career by joining the Mayhem.
