Busy day for Central Georgians in MLB draft
Two Mercer players and a Maconite were among those chosen in the second day of the MLB draft. Their story, along with the Braves' picks and in-state selection at The Latest Coverage.
Savannah has the upper hand over Macon again
Middle Georgia State’s Trenton Nash drove in four runs on two hits to lead Savannah past Macon 10-3 in Coastal Plain League action.
Macon led 1-0 in the top of the first, but Savannah answered for a 2-1 lead and kept it.
Macon (2-3) hosts Gastonia (1-3) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Georgia College’s Kyle King is a pitcher for the Grizzlies.
Braves revived, get revenge on the Padres
A close game after four became a not-so-close game after a five and a ‘wish we had a mercy rule’ through seven, Atlanta hammering San Diego 14-1.
The Braves scored five in the fifth and seventh innings. Freddie Freeman’s night ended early, still a 4-for-4 game with two RBI and three runs.
Nick Markakis added two hits and three RBI and Dansby Swanson three hits and three RBI, with Charlie Culberson chipping in two hits and two RBI. Kurt Suzuki went 3-for-6 with two RBI.
Sean Newcomb went six innings, allowing three hits and three walks with four strikeouts to improve to 7-1.
Macon Mayhem get a new GM, set home schedule
Blair Floyd has been promoted to general manager of the Macon Mayhem from assistant general manager.
He became the assistant for 2016-17 and has played a role in attendance increases.
Floyd succeeds Kevin Kerr, who was also the team's head coach before resigning last month for a job in the ECHL.
Leo Thomas was promoted to head coach while also assuming Kerr's role as director of hockey operations.
The Mayhem also announced their home schedule.
Smart teams - Mercer, Harvard - to play at Philips
Mercer and Harvard will square off in men's basketball in late December of this year.
The official date, either Dec. 29 or 30, is dependent upon facility event schedules.
Mercer finished 19-15 in 2017-18 and Harvard, which played at Hawkins Arena in 2010, was 18-14 under Tommy Amaker, entering his 12th season.
This Week's Signings
Central Georgia Tech picked up a familiar name this week, with former Stratford forward Nate Brooks signing with the Titans.
Brooks left Stratford after his juior year and moved with family to Michigan, becoming eligible midway through the season and averaging 16 points and 12 rebounds.
He then played at Panola (Texas) College, a junior college. He played in 24 games, averaging 2.8 points and 1.8 rebounds in 24 minutes a game. ...
This Week's Honor Roll
Three Middle Georgia State baseball players earned NAIA All-American honorable mention this week.
The trio is led by former Houston County standout Blake Jackson, who belted 12 homers for 79 RBI while hitting .312 for the Knights, who reached the NAIA national tournament.
Zach Cornell led MGSU with a .404 average and 97 hits, while Trenton Nash batted .344 with 15 homers and 56 RBI.
