November 2017 Todays

Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017

In The Sports Report

Need some nuggets on Warner Robins, Mary Persons, and Peach County and the semifinals? Got ‘em here.

Coming Thursday: Warner Robins is off one of its best performances in a long time, and faces the team that disposed of a familiar – and now friendly – foe, Jones County. Peach County has waited a year to get the nasty taste of last year’s close loss to Greater Atlanta Christian.

ICYMI: GHSA makes moves, GHSA championship info, former Perry standout Casey Hayward loses brother, Loughdmouthings on the college football playoffs and redundant discussions; entertaining stuff from Lanier grad and Super Bowl winner J.T. Thomas at the Macon TD Club.

Coming Friday: Mary Persons knows Blessed Trinity, the Class 4A semifinalist. And TBA.

Weather

High around 70, low around 55, 20 percent chance of moisture.

Saturday’s Soap Opera of Football

12:30 p.m., FOX

TCU vs. Oklahoma, Arlington Texas, Big 12 Championship: TCU tries to avenge a sound 38-20 thrashing on Nov. 12 in Norman, and in the process, make people very, very happy in Tuscaloosa, Columbus, Auburn and Athens, among other places. Line: Oklahoma by 7.

4 p.m., CBS

Georgia vs. Auburn, Atlanta, SEC Championship, CBS: Will Georgia’s offensive plan be one geared toward success rather than treading water? Can Auburn have another fundamentally sound game? Line: Auburn by 2.5.

8 p.m., ABC

Miami vs. Clemson, Charlotte, ACC Championship: A quasi-home game for Clemson, loser to Syracuse, against Miami, a loser to Pittsburgh, for probably a spot in the final four, if you’re Clemson, or Miami if the Canes dominate like they haven’t in a long time against a good team. Line: Clemson by 9.5.

8 p.m., FOX

Ohio State vs. Wisconsin, Big 10 Championship: Never have so many SEC fans who have spent the past several years ripping the Big 10 been so focused on a Big 10 game, and how the undefeated team is an underdog to a two-loss team. Line: Ohio State by 6.5.

In The Sports Report

J.T. Thomas went from Macon’s Lanier High to being Florida State’s first African-American football recruit to winning four Super Bowls with Pittsburgh. He had a lot to talk about Monday at the Macon Touchdown Club.

Prep notebook: The GHSA made some midway reclassification adjustments; need state championship football info? And more.

Loughdmouthings (Tuesday morning): Discussing the possibilities and potential and maybes of the weekly college football playoff poll is a stress-inducing time-waster. It’s fairly simple, and Tuesday night’s poll won’t change that very much.

Coming Wednesday: TBA, so come back and visit around lunch or dinner for an update. Maybe an edition of Loughdmouthings looking at the college football poll that doesn’t change much.

Weather

Like Tuesday, high around 70, maybe a chance of rain, low in the mid40s. Same days for Thursday and Friday, warmer nights.

In The Sports Report

Sure, there are scenarios galore, but not worthy of the stress of daily and hourly debate for something that won’t change until kickoff, regardless of the latest college playoff poll Tuesday night (Clemson. Loughdmouthings offers thoughts, but advises moving on, grabbing aspirin for the daily coaching sagas, and just prepare for a high-stress Saturday.

J.T. Thomas has fit in a lot in his 66 years, and the Macon native shared some of that – including playing for legendary coaches Goot Steiner at Lanier and Chuck Noll with the Pittsburgh Steelers – during a visit to the Macon Touchdown Club. Story to post around lunchtime.

A man with Central Georgia ties is no longer the interim head football coach at Georgia Southern.

Coming Tuesday afternoon: belated prep notes. And more on Warner Robins, Mary Persons and Peach County as the week continues. Updated Reading/Viewing Material as well.

There are two days worth of Reading/Viewing material to catch up on, and the latest coaching carousel story or two will pop up around dinnertime.

Update, 5:15 p.m.: J.T. Thomas's visit to the Macon TD Club is posted. Some Reading/Viewing Material and a short prep notebook to come this evening.

Weather

Basic rerun of Monday: high in 60s, low in 40s. Then three days of highs above 70, lows in upper 40s and higher.

 In The Sports Report

A Macon native and high school grad, the first African-American football player signed by Florida State, and multiple Super Bowl champ is the final speaker of the season for the Macon Touchdown Club.

The jamboree speaker in February? Take a read. It’s a big ‘n. Could be in a national championship playoff.

And, well, the variety of Reading/Viewing Material is pretty vast, some Saturday leftovers and catching up after a somewhat silly Sunday as the coaching carousel was downright dizzying.

The high school scores and pairings are updated in the High School Scoreboard.

Coming Monday: Loughdmouthings on, well, either the playoff scenario or this coaching mess. We'll see.

Weather

Nice day, in the 60s and sunny, dropping to mid-30s. And it’s pretty much that way for several days, although Thursday’s low is a power-bill-friendly 51.

Early Friday peek: 67 high, 33 low. Second halves will be cold.

 In The Sports Report

The Saturday Afternoon QB was full.

Warner Robins was stunningly dominant of a major program in hammering Carrollton.

Peach County was dominant despite injuries in thumping a quality program in Westminster.

Mary Persons cruised in the second half to knock out a playoff-test program from Jefferson.

And then: Injury-plagued Jones County comes up short at Carver; Stratford leads into the fourth quarter and falls; Macon County stopped in the final minutes to lose at Irwin County.

Check out early Saturday Loughdmouthings (must check those picks).

Peach County’s Kearis Jackson, a UGA commit, appears done for the season with a wrist injury.

ICYMI: Full Friday previews, and capsules with predictions. Army head coach Jeff Monken loves his job, and loves coming to Georgia and recruiting. He sure loves beating Navy, where he used to work (along with Georgia Southern). Former Veterans standout Rashaad Bolton is working to get on the field for the Black Knights.

More may show up around dinnertime Sunday, most likely some Loughdmouthings at a minimum.

Weather

Nice. Yard-work nice, mid 60s daytime, a brrrr mid-30s at night.

Macon Mayhem on a roll

John Siemer hit the game-winner in the third period to lead Macon to a 5- win over Knoxville on Saturday.

Friday night’s scores and next week’s semifinal pairings are set.

Coming Saturday: The Saturday Afternoon QB takes another  look at Friday’s Central Georgia games, with a general high school notebook.

Also coming Saturday by noon (update: coming Saturday night or Sunday morning, and loads of it), an early Reading/Viewing Material, including the latest on coaching moves, and perhaps more.

Update, 7:30 p.m.: A noontime batch of Loughdmouthings has been up. The Saturday Afternoon QB, a little late thanks to the Iron Bowl, is up – wild Friday night – along with an update on Peach County’s Kearis Jackson. Notebook to come on Sunday.

Weather

High of 67 and partly sunny, low in the low-to-mid 40s.

Friday, Nov. 24, 2017

In The Sports Report

The by-far most comprehensive look at Central Georgia playoff games - with, you know, information and names and stats and stuff - is back.

Warner Robins survived turnovers and mistakes last week, but Carrollton brings more than a dozen Division I prospects to McConnell-Talbert, and is unlikely to allow the Demons to survive those issues.

Carver is a one-loss team that hasn't gotten much attention, but it has the attention of Jones County head coach Justin Rogers.

Mary Persons has been inconsistent this season, with a half of simple mistakes followed by a sharp half, a habit that steady Jefferson and standout running back Colby Wood - off a win over undefeated Ridgeland - have avoided.

A week after scoring 59 points, Westminster brings that offense south. To Peach County, and a pretty sporty defense.

A battle of the running attacks - and offensive linemen - is set for Stratford's visit to Mount Paran in a battle of playoff-tested programs.

Coming around lunchtime Friday: Macon County is healthy, and doesn’t have far to travel for a familiar opponent. Later Friday, short capsules on the games.

Update, 1 p.m.: Macon County and Irwin County are set for a four-quarter - or longer - quarterfinal. Posted.

 Weather

High in the mid-60s, in the low-50s around kickoff and few degrees cooler for the ride home en route to a low of 40.

Thursday, Nov. 23, 2017

 In The Sports Report

Rashaad Bolton’s versatility has led to position changes at Army, but the Veterans grad showed up at West Point along with scores of other talented players.

Carver is a one-loss team, with the loss to Class 6A Alexander. Jones County coach Justin Rogers thinks the Panthers are a secret, and hopes to avoid letting that secret out by losing Friday’s Class 5A quarterfinal at Grady Stadium.

Coming Thursday: Stratford travels to take on a veteran playoff team, but the Eagles are healthy, thanks to that bye, and took care of things in the second round.

Also, Peach County wasn’t terribly sharp last week and welcomes Westminster, which has five losses, all to playoff teams with four still alive.

Coming Friday: Warner Robins has to be sharper against Carrollton, which has more than a dozen Division I prospects; Mary Persons is at home against a team with one of the state’s top running backs the past few years (Colby Wood is a versatile multi-sport standout who also has a 4.0) but is a playoff-tested program, like the Bulldogs.

And Macon County travels to Irwin County for the second time this season and third time in two seasons, and the Bulldogs are healthier than in weeks.

Also, capsules on each Central Georgia playoff game, and a look at some of those Saturday rivalry games.

Weather

High around 60, low around 42, cloudy more than sunny. Friday’s kickoff weather: A little warmer in the day time and a hair cooler at night.

Turkey Day football

College

7:30 p.m.: A typically frisky Egg Bowl has Mississippi State hosting Ole Miss.

NFL

12:30 p.m.: Minnesota at Detroit: The Vikings are quietly one of the better teams in the NFL. Line: Minnesota by 2.5.

4:30 p.m.: San Die, er, L.A. Chargers at Dallas: The Chargers will have to adjust to having more people in the stands than, well, when they’re at home. Line: Chargers by 2.5 (Yes, Chargers).

8:30 p.m.: N.Y Giants at Washington: The Giants finally won again last week, a joy that’s likely to not be repeated against the Redskins. Line: Washington by 7.

 In The Sports Report

Jeff Monken has a fascinating coaching career, from twice working at our national academies to recruiting Georgia. And he loves it. In This Week’s Coverage.

Coming Wednesday: The battle for a Central Georgian to get on the field for an improving Army program.

And in the plans over the next few days: A look at all the remaining playoff teams’ games, Alumni Update, Loughdmouthings, and Reading/Viewing Material (which will include local college hoops and the Braves’ mess, among other topics).

So come back on Thursday and Friday. And, well, ya know, every day.

 Weather

Like Tuesday, high around 70, maybe a chance of rain, low in the mid40s. Turkey Day:  partly cloudy, high around 60, low around 40.

In The Sports Report

Coming Tuesday, lunchtime: Army head coach Jeff Monken still has ties to Georgia, and recruiting the state is a focal point.

Prep notes are on the agenda as well. Check out the playoff pairings in This Week’s Coverage.

There are two days worth of Reading/Viewing material to catch up on, and the latest coaching carousel story or two will pop up around dinnertime.

Weather

A little warmer, near 70, with a 20 percent chance of rain, and a low around 50, to be repeated Wednesday.

Falcons hold off Seahawks

The Falcons had a pair of two-touchdown leads in the first half and spent the second half fending off Seattle for a 34-31 win Monday to improve to 6-4 and jump right back in the middle – or upper half – of the NFC playoff race.

 In The Sports Report

The by-far most comprehensive look at Central Georgia playoff games - with, you know, information and names and stats and stuff - is back, with a breakdown and predictions for 13 games, including Baldwin, Dublin, West Laurens, Macon County and Dodge County.

The final regular-season high school standings and final regular-season stats and polls have been moved to Archive: Reference, which is where all such items will end up.

The HS Scoreboard has updated stats - although getting updated info from schools has been difficult - and it will host the playoff scores and schedule through the rest of the season.

ICYMI: Alumni Update has a number of all-conference football selections from around the area; Loughdmouthings: coaching searches are a mess, from bad AD plans to delusional fans; Jones County and Peach County are without key cogs on offense; longtime Warner Robins coach Richard Fendley passed away.

Weather

Nice, with a high in the upper 60s, 10 pct. chance of something other than nice, mid-40s low. About the same on Saturday, a little warmer.

Kickoff will be pretty cool, in the 50s, but the trip home won't be much colder (unless you lose and have a long drive).

Coming Friday: The most comprehensive playoff capsules for Central Georgia playoff teams as part of the area's most comprehensive prep coverage.

Coaching searches are brutal. Fans are absurd in the names they throw out and the general beliefs they hold, and what ADs should look for is off-kilter. How to do it (and what Florida and Tennessee should consider): Loughdmouthings.

A fresher set of GHSA football pairings is set, including all area teams and opponents’ records, and a look at the area regions’ performances so far.

Coming Wednesday: a new Alumni Update.

Update, 3:15 p.m.: A new Alumni Update is ready, with a number of kids getting college all-conference honors, and more than a half-dozen high schools repped.

Update, 2 p.m.: The playoff pairings are set, with all teams’ records, plus how the area regions are representing.

Update, 8:15 p.m.: Coaching searches could be easier if ADs were smarter; as for fans (and please don’t mention Gruden), Loughdmouthings.

 In The Sports Report

There will be an early afternoon edition of Loughdmouthings that will, unfortunately, address the, uh, events of Saturday. Take a look at Saturday's Loughdmouthings and you'll see some foreshadowing of a few things, although nowhere near to the level of what actually happened.

Which even no Auburn fan predicted.

It'll include some Falcons offerings, a reminder to avoid the ledges because there remains - as warned recently - too much football left to panic about the CFP polls (especially when execution and game plans offer more reasons to panic, a bit of which was quasi-predicted).

And there'll be a short update on high schools and colleges.

Catch up with the pairings and scores and the high school Saturday Afternoon Quarterback.

Weather

A little cooler with some afternoon rain, a 50 percent chance, but a mild low in the mid-40s. Things jump to near 70 on Monday, and stay at least mid-60s or better for several days.

And there is plenty of Reading/Viewing Material the past few days.

Coming Thursday: The prep stats will be updated in the afternoon, and will be joined by the latest Loughdmouthings and a look at one or two of Friday's more interesting games. Look for a list of signings from the first two days of the signing period.

And a new selection of Reading/Viewing Material.

Up to date: The High School Scoreboard has the final regular-season GHSA standings, week 10 scores, and playoff games, plus the two state polls. Stats are next along with the Maxwell Projections for Central Georgia playoff games.

Coming Friday: The most comprehensive playoff capsules for Central Georgia playoff teams, all 19, plus a look at the GISA semifinals.

Update, 7:30 p.m.: Nice drastic weather change has led to nice drastic cough, so the specific preview(s) and Loughdmouthings are pushed back to early Friday, but the prep football stats and Maxwell predictions are up to date, so the whole High School Scoreboard is ready. Reading/Viewing Material update is based on success of cough medicine.
