Braves welcome Toronto and have fun in the process

          All-Star Mike Foltynewicz had six-plus quality innings, hit a wall in the seventh, but the Braves had enough – and enough Ozzie Albies – to beat Toronto. Also: Freeman in HR Derby, minor-league update, and more in The Braves Report.

 

Macon opens second half at Savannah with familiar results

          Six runs in three innings put Savannah in control en route to an 8-5 win over visiting Macon.

          The Bananas led3-2 after five, but put across three in the sixth and two in the seventh for an 8-2 lead, going on to win despite being outhit by two.

           Cade Marlowe’s two-run double highlighted Savannah’s sixth.

          Kenton Crawford went 5-for-5 for the Bacon, with two runs and an RBI, while Jackson Jones had two hits and three RBI. Alex Canty, CJ Bush, and Keaton Weisz had two hits apiece for Macon.

          Jordan Dubberly fell to 0-2, while Brayden Belden improved to 3-2.

          Savannah improved to 22-10, and is 8-3 against Macon (16-15).

          Macon is at Lexington County on Thursday and hosts Florence on Friday.

FVSU picked third in East

          Fort Valley State was predicted to finish third in the East in the SIAC at the conference’s media day Tuesday.

          Albany State got seven first-place votes and Benedict two and FVSU’s one for the order of the top three. Tuskegee is the choice to win the West.

          FVSU’s Cameron Young, of Dodge County, made the preseason all-conference first team at defensive back, and Lorenzo Smothers made the first team at punt returner and second team at kickoff returner.

          Offensive lineman Darrius Hicks, linebacker David Brown, and defensive back Aaron Dore also made first team for the Wildcats. Quarterback Slade Jarmon, defensive lineman Demetrius Harris, and defensive back Nicco Whigham were second-team choices.

          Miles quarterback Justin Hardy and Tuskegee linebacker Davoris Thomas earned player of the year honors.

          FVSU opens the season on Sept. 1 at Florida A&M.

 

Central Georgia repped in another baseball All-America team

          Veterans alum Gabe Holt and Mercer’s Le Bassett have been named to Baseball America’s freshman All-America team.

          Holt, of Texas Tech, was a first-team pick after batting .349 with 29 steals.

          Bassett made the second team after hitting .282 with 17 homers and 60 RBI. He had already made such teams by Collegiate Baseball and the baseball writers.

 

This Week’s Honor Roll

          The Mercer men's basketball team is one of two from the Southern Conference earning a Team Academic Excellence Award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

          UNCG is the other one.

          Teams must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA for the year, and includes all team members. ...

          Mercer led the Southern Conference with 309 members of the 2017-18 academic honor roll. 

          The Bears had 80 more than No. 2, ETSU, and 33 had 4.0 GPAs. Another 86 earned the Commissioner’s Medal for a 3.8 or better.
