Sunday's Braves Report: Teheran sharp and gets some offense as Braves win

Teheran on point and gets some offense as Braves win

Julio Teheran wasn’t too happy when he came out in the seventh inning, but manager Brian Snitker didn’t want to push things.

Teheran fanned six with three walks and allowed four hits through 6.1 innings as Atlanta ended the first half of the season in style with a 5-1 win over Arizona.

Atlanta got going early with four runs in the third.

Johan Comargo singled and Dansby Swanson doubled for a run. Ozzie Albies followed a sacrifice with an RBI single, and Freddie Freeman brought in a run an out later with a double. Nick Markakis’ single to center plated the final run.

Preston Tucker, just up from AAA, added a homer in the seventh.

Arizona got a run in the eighth off Dan Winkler, who replaced Jesse Biddle, on a Jon Jay homer.

Swanson had the lone two-hit day for Atlanta, which stranded only four runners. Teheran improved to 7-6.

Braves won as many games (3) in 3 days at St. Louis June 29-July 1 as they’ve won in 11 games since then (3-8 entering Sunday)./DOB

Sean Newcomb recorded a career-low two swing and misses yesterday. This matches Jon Lester (June 20) and Sal Ramano (July 10) for the lowest total produced in any start this year that has included at least 100 pitches.

Today's Dbacks starter, lefty Patrick Corbin, is 4-0 with a 0.98 ERA in seven games (five starts) against the Braves/DOB

Teheran is coming off consecutive 100-pitch outings for the second time this year. When he last did on June 4 in San Diego, his 4-seam FB averaged 87.7 mph./MB

Corbin's 0.98 ERA is the lowest all-time vs. #Braves by a pitcher with a minimum of 5 starts against them, but he did give up 2 earned runs in 5 innings of his only start at SunTrust last July for no decision in a #Dbacks loss./DOB

Teheran recorded a pair of strikeouts during a perfect 13-pitch first inning. He threw five sliders (2 whiffs and 2 called strikes) and five 4-seamers, maxing at 93 mph and averaging 91.3 mph/MB

Dbacks' Corbin gave up a total of four runs in 36 2/3 innings vs. #Braves before today. Braves have 3 runs in the third inning./DOB

Teheran threw three 4-seamers in the third inning each of which ranged between 89-90 mph. His first FB in the fourth was clocked at 85 mph, but each of his last seven ranged between 88-90 mph./MB

Teheran has allowed two hits over six scoreless. His FB ranged between 89-93 mph in the sixth./MB

Biddle retired the next two to get out of the seventh and leave #Braves' Teheran with this line: 6 1/3 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K. (79/50)/DOB

That was Teheran's sixth pickoff of the season, the most among RHPs and second-most among all pitchers. Teheran has 18 pickoffs since the start of 2015. Kyle Hendricks (15) is the only other RHP w/ more than 11 during this span./MB
