Monday's Braves Report (final edition): Touki money in first start, Acuna homers in both games of sweep

Toussaint inspiring in debut as Braves bop Marlins

Touki Toussaint wasn’t around for his team’s big inning, but he pitched with no worries in his MLB debut, going six innings in Atlanta’s 9-1 win over Miami in the first game of a day/night doubleheader.

He fanned four with two walks, gave up two hits and a run in six full innings. Atlanta put five across in the bottom of the sixth. He wasn’t around for the offensive barrage, but pitched like he had room on the scoreboard, albeit against a weak offense.

He threw 52 strikes in 82 pitches. Jesse Biddle and Chad Sobotoka finished the Marlins off.

Ronald Acuna led the Braves’ first off with a homer, and had two hits and three RBI. Ozzie Albies and Johan Camargo had two hits each, Albies driving in two runs.

Acuna became the youngest player to lead off both games of a doubleheader with a homer, pacing the Braves to a 6-1 win in the nightcap.

Mike Foltynewciz threw eight solid innings, and added an RBI single in the sixth to improve to 10-7 with his third straight win.

Vizcaino is scheduled to start throwing Wednesday./GB

Toussaint will be seventh-youngest pitcher to make MLB start this year, yet only fourth-youngest for Braves (Soroka, Allard, Gohara)./GB

Fried (groin) skipping the Orlando part of rehab since he’s further along than expected, Snitker said. He’ll likely make a rehab start soon at Gwinnett./DOB

Soroka still rehabbing shoulder, not throwing yet, seems unlikely to return this season. Snitker said if that's case, he'd probably pitch a little in an Instructional League game in fall before shutting down for winter./DOB

Toussaint's fastball touched 96 mph during a 12-pitch, perfect first inning. He threw four curveballs. One resulted in Prado's F9 and three missed the zone after he got ahead of Realmuto with a 0-2 count./MB

Stop me if you've heard this before: Ronald Acuna homers to open the game. His 16th. 1-0./GB

Toussaint has been consistently missing arm side. He issued a four-pitch walk to Dietrich to open the second. Riddle followed w/ a single against a CB a few inches off the plate. After Galloway doubled on an elevated FB, the Braves' rookie retired the next three batters./MB

Galloway's double ties the game. Three straight Marlins have reached base against Toussaint./GB

Albies, Freeman and Markakis are all on pace to record at least 74 extra-base hits -- a total that has been reached just 25 times in Braves' history/MB

Dietrich 3-6-1 GIDP to end 6th. Toussaint impressive today, folks. Great stuff. And I love the energy and personality he displays constantly./DOB

Toussaint has retired 14 of 16 since allowing the second inning's first three batters to reach safely. Realmuto (HBP and BB) has been Miami's only baserunner since the start of the third./MB

Touki looked very, very good. Arsenal is impressive, you can tell he was having fun. Most impressive debut I've seen (wasn't in NY for Soroka)./GB

Toussaint: 6 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K. Because he was the 26th man during today's doubleheader, the Braves will have the option to bring him back within the next 10 days without a DL move./ (Correction): Toussaint will not be eligible to return unless part of a DL move until Aug. 23. Because he was the 26th man, the Braves were able to shave a day off that 10-day minimum./MB

Hard to believe Toussaint wasn't on Top-100 prospect lists entering this season. Shows how far he's come this year. On plenty of those lists 2-3 years ago, but not this year. Was No. 10 on BA's midseason update of #Braves prospects. Sure think team rank him higher at this point./DOB

Updated

Acuna is the first to lead off both games of a doubleheader with a homer since Baltimore's Brady Anderson did it in a 1999 doubleheader against the White Sox./DOB

Players to hit a leadoff homer in both ends of a doubleheader Acuna (Today) Brady Anderson (8/21/99) Rickey Henderson (7/6/93) Harry Hopper (5/30/13)/MB

Foltynewicz: 8 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 3 BB. He has allowed two earned runs or less in 18 of his 23 starts, including each of his past three. The Braves rotation has a 2.83 ERA over the past 16 games./MB
