A pair of Central Georgia teens had good Saturdays in different sports.

Stratford junior Samuel Barrow advanced in the USTA Boys 18 and 16 National Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Carol Pyon, a Rutland grad and Mercer signee who has been one of the state’s top high school girls golfers the past few years, won her first-round match in the Georgia-South Carolina Girls Junior Challenge Match.

The tournament is behind held at Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee.

Barrow beat Joseph Teh 6-4, 7-6 (5) in the first round of the boys 16s, and will play Ishaan Ravichnder, who is seeded 18th and had a first-round bye, Sunday morning.

Pyon beat Mary Kathryn Talledo 3 & 2 to help Georgia beat South Carolina 11.5-6.5.

Georgia won four matches and lost two. Each match is worth a point, with each team getting a half point for matches all square after 18 holes.

Pyon and Tess Davenport are returnees from last year’s team. Pyon finished tied for fifth in the Georgia Girls Championship last month in Roswell.
