Former Stratford multi-sport standout Quintez Cephus has filed a lawsuit against Wisconsin for violating his rights by moving ahead with an investigation of charges against him in August for sexual assault despite his inability to participate in the school’s investigation because of the criminal investigation.
The suit was filed in U.S. District Court, charging that a Title IX investigation started in May should be stopped because of Cephus’ “inability to participate in an interview or otherwise meaningfully participate in the university’s process.”
Cephus was charged in August with two counts of sexual assault and immediately denied the charges.
On Sept. 11, he was ordered to stand trial for the charges in a short preliminary hearing. During that procedure, Cephus’ attorneys sought to have the more serious charge – second-degree sexual assault of an intoxicated person – dismissed because of defense evidence showing both women appeared not to be as intoxicated as inferred.
Cephus announced on Twitter in August that he was leaving the team to fight an unspecified legal issue, and charges were filed within about a day. He was shortly thereafter suspended.
