Radio: WNEX-FM 100.9
Line: Wofford by 12 (Sagarin Ratings)
Central Georgians on Wofford roster: None. There are 14 Georgians on the roster.
Scouting Report: One thing to be on is this will be close.
Wofford is 4-0 against Mercer since the 2014 reinstatement of football for the Bears, and 12 points have separted the teams in the last three meetings.
Mercer is looking to knock off a second ranked team this season, to go with Samford. A win would be the Bears’ fourth straight on the road against a ranked team.
We've very hungry,” running back Tee Mitchell said. “You get a sense of frustration when you don't play as well as you want to, week in, week out. So to be in the hunt (for a SoCon title) this late in the season is a good feeling.”
The Bears are off an interesting Saturday, a 59-46 home win over Western Carolina.
Mitchell became the Bears’ career rushing leader last week, going for 157 yards and a score on the day, pushing his career total to 2,640 yards. He is the SoCon’s active rushing leader by more than 1,000 career yards. David Durden returned a kickoff 95 yards for a score against the Catamounts, setting a school record for the longest return.
Wofford’s Lennox McAfee is second on the conference rushing list behind Mitchell.
The Terriers were picked to finish second or third in the preseason under first-year head coach Josh Conklin, and they’ve been ranked all year.
Wofford has lost to Wyoming by three and Furman by 20, and comes in off a 30-17 win over then-No. 21 ETSU.
Washington County grad Will Coneway is third in the conference and 34th in the nation with 9.1 tackles a game.
Wofford leads the conference in rush offense with 354.1 yards a game, topping The Citadel by 72 yards. Mercer is eighth in rush defense.
"Wofford is nationally ranked and is among the nation's best in total defense, rushing defense and offensively, they are excellent at rushing the ball with around 365 yards per game," Mercer head coach Bobby Lamb said at his weekly press conference. "We could go on and on with where Wofford ranks ... They were SoCon champions last year and are off to a great start at 5-2.
"We've got to go on the road to beat them and we're hoping we can continue to get healthier this week."
It should be a fun day for the running backs.
"I don't think the coaches care so much about (matching Wofford run-for-run),” Mitchell said. “I think they're understandably more focused on finding favorable matchups and exploiting those weaknesses.”
