Macon TD Club honors pair from Westside
The Macon Touchdown Club has picked two Westside players for weekly honors.
Quarterback Victor Dixon was 10 of 27 for 207 yards and two scores in the Seminoles’ 32-18 win over Cook for back honors.
Linebacker Jayland Parker is the lineman after getting 10 tackles and two fumble recoveries.
West Georgia’s David Dean the Macon Touchdown Club speaker
David Dean, one of the state’s most successful and experienced coaches, is Monday night’s speaker at the Macon Touchdown Club.
Westside is the featured high school. Former Georgia Tech assistant and Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen is next week’s speaker.
A former wideout at Georgia Tech, his coaching career began as an assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-91, and then was an assistant at West Georgia from 1992-1999, helping the Wolves to their first winning season in Division II as well as their first playoff appearance and first two Gulf South titles.
He returned to VSU under Chris Hatcher as an assistant, and succeeded Hatcher as head coach in 2007, leading the Blazers to Division II national titles in 2007 and 2012. He was co-offensive coordinator at Georgia Southern for one season under Tyson Summers, and returned to West Georgia as head coach in 2017.
His head coaching record is 107-36 in 12 seasons, a winning percentage of 75 percent. He has never had a losing record as a head coach and been part of only three as an assistant. He has led West Georgia to two straight playoff appearances, the Wolves getting a spot over the weekend.
The Wolves have several Central Georgians on the roster: wide receiver Shannon Smith of Westside, wideout Julius Cobbs of Warner Robins, kicker Omar Cervantes of Peach County, offensive lineman Quentin Stanford of Northside, and wideout Jaeven West of Warner Robins.
The club meets at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, in the Rumford Center, at 304 Pierce Ave. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and the program to begin around 7. Cost is $30 for non-members, who needn't be accompanied by a member.

Passing, defense, and quality finishing led Atlanta to a 3-1 win over NYCFC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Georgia College lost to Augusta in four sets in the Peach Belt Conference tournament finals, with Libby Bochniak and Kayla Brockway making the all-tournament teams.
But there was good news: The Bobcats earned an at-large spot to the NCAA Southeast Regional at Wingate, and will get a rematch with Augusta on Thursday at noon. …
Fourth-seeded Mercer takes on fifth-seeded Wofford on Friday in the first round of the Southern Conference volleyball tournament. …
Georgia Southern welcomes Mercer Monday night in women’s basketball.
GSU is 0-2, Mercer 0-1. The Bears lead the series 36-30.
