Nine Central Georgia high school football teams woke up and planned a Monday practice, courtesy of wins Friday. Check out the pairings – with records, regions, and rankings, and who’s next – in The Latest Coverage.
Falcons lose at home on the final play
Brett Maher missed a field goal last month that would’ve beaten Washington, and earlier in the day doinked a PAT.
This time, he barely made what he needed to.
Maher’s 42-yarder stayed flat just enough to creep inside the right upright after the buzzer to beat Atlanta 22-19 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in front of what sounder more like a Cowboys home game.
Atlanta (4-6) lost its second straight, and fourth in the final minute.
Ezekiel Elliott had 122 yards rushing and 79 receiving for Dallas.
Matt Ryan connected with Julio Jones with 1:52 left for the Falcons only touchdown, only for Dallas to drive 51 yards in 10 plays.
Season pretty much at ‘poof’ level
And now, a short week and road trip
Former Maryland head coach and ex-Georgia Tech assistant Friedgen the Macon Touchdown Club speaker
Ralph Friedgen, one of the top college football offensive minds for three decades, is the speaker Monday at the Macon Touchdown Club.
Jones County and Stratford are the featured high schools. ESPN’s Mark Schlabach is next week’s speaker, replacing Army’s Jeff Monken.
Friedgen has been an assistant at The Citadel, William & Mary, Murray State, Maryland, Georgia Tech twice, and the San Diego Chargers, and head coach at Maryland from 2001-10.
Friedgen was an assistant at Georgia Tech twice, from 1987-1991 – he was the offensive coordinator of the co-national title team under Bobby Ross – and 1997-2000 under George O’Leary, earning the Frank Broyles Award in 1999 as the nation’s top assistant/
Tech went 65-40-1 with Friedgen on staff.
Friedgen, who played guard at Maryland in the late 1960s, went 75-50 as head coach at Maryland and 5-2 in bowls. He was fired, after reportedly being told he was returning, after an 8-4 year in 2010.
Maryland has been a mess since his controversial firing, with two 7-6 seasons the only winning marks. The Terps are looking for the fourth head coach, including interim, since Friedgen’s dismissal
The club meets at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, in the Rumford Center, at 304 Pierce Ave. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and the program to begin around 7. Cost is $30 for non-members, who needn't be accompanied by a member.
