Fort Valley State hires new women’s basketball head coach
Andrea Williams is the latest new head coach at Fort Valley State, announced Tuesday as taking over the women’s basketball program.
Williams comes from Oakland (Mich.) University, where she was an assistant coach since 2016. That followed a season at Indiana-Purdue-Fort Worth as an assistant.
She was head coach at Air Force from 2010-2015 after a few years at South Florida and at Jacksonville. She has also been an assistant at Navy, Tampa, and Edinboro (Pa.).
Williams was a head coach at Division III Waynesburg (Pa.) in the late 1990s.
Tuesday’s release and an online copy of Williams’ resume doesn’t list any career record as a head coach, but the Air Force website states a 22-128 record but Air Force hasn’t had a winning record since 1994-95 or reached double-digit wins since 2007-08. Williams was 12-35 at Waynesburg.
She has been part of postseason teams that participated in the NCAA WNIT and Division II Tournament.
Le’Coe Willingham was released from her contract during the summer, a move of which Fort Valley made no announcement. Willingham’s name simply disappeared from the staff directory online.
Tuesday’s release also makes no mention of who Williams is replacing, when the vacancy occurred, or why.
Willingham was hired in the summer of 2017 and went 4-23 and 5-20.
The team hasn’t had a winning record since going 15-13 in 2012-13 under longtime head coach Lonnie Bartley.
The school also hired Terry Rhodes as the head cross country and track coach.
