Saturday's Daily News 'n Notes: State championship softball Saturday; Mercer Tennis Classic; Mayhem; Falcons, and moreoreboard

Saturday’s Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media. Updates coming Sunday

Championship Softball Saturday: Central Georgia crowns three

The first title was won around 4 p.m., with rain bearing down. The second title – connected to delays from what became the third one – followed more than three and a half  hours later. And the final one a little after eight.

All three had very different storylines, but the bottom line is that Mount de Sales, Westfield, and Windsor all went to bed and woke up as state champions.

For more than some video snippets – like the who and how the Central Georgia teams won – check out details from all of Saturday’s GHSA and GISA action in The Latest Coverage.

The Central Georgia teams got done before the rain really came down, ending Saturday’s action in Columbus until Monday. The only championship decided? Mount de Sales. Other finals will be at school sites.

Rogers and Stewart to play for Mercer Tennis Classic title

Shelby Rogers and Katerina Stewart took different paths, but they ended up in the same spot, playing for the singles title at the Mercer Tennis Classic.

They battle, for the first time, at noon at the Leroy Peddy Tennis Center at Mercer.

Rogers, of South Carolina, has been on a roll throughout the tournament, and she pretty much kept going in her semifinal against Grace Min, winning 6-4, 6-2.

Stewart entered the tournament as a wildcard, and is now playing for the big money.

She dispatched Danielle Lao 6-3, 6-0 in a match a little closer than that early. Lao had to stop for a medical issue, and couldn’t regain any momentum after that. Stewart’s first-serve percentage was 74 percent, and she mixed things up too well.

The doubles final was a sweat-inducer.

Usue Maitane Arconada and Caroline Dolehide survived a big battle with Jaimee Fourlis of Australia and Valentini Grammatikopoulou of Greece 6-7 (2), 6-2, 10-8.

Admission is free, and the final will be on The Tennis Channel.
