GMC, Bleckley County look to defend cross country titles … again
For Bleckley County’s girls, a fourth straight awaits. For GMC’s boys, a fourth straight and fifth in seven years awaits.
The targets will be on those teams, as well as the Bleckley County boys, when the GHSA state cross country meet starts Friday, runners converging at Carrollton High.
On Friday, Class 4A, 6A, and 5A run, with the others on Saturday.
Bleckley County’s girls boast contenders Tristen Crosby and former champ Austin Perez, who was third last year.
The Royals’ Garrett Rogers is a favorite in AA boys, two years after winning it, along with teammate Luke Churchwell. The Royals took fifth last year and third in 2017.
Colin McCabe of GMC was third last year in Class A Public boys, and but the Bulldogs lost some key high finishers from last year in Logan Steinmeyer and Taylor Sherwood.
Justin Wachtel of Mary Persons is a strong favorite in 4A boys. He recently broke the state record with a time of 14:26.91, and ranks first by a bit, finishing second by less than a second in 2018.
Mari Jablonski of Monticello in AA girls, along with Mackenzie Walls of Veterans and Laney Doster of Jones County in 5A. Walls finished third last year and Doster sixth.
ACE’s girls finished second in Class A Public, led by a fifth-place finish from returnee Olivia Lowrimore.

Georgia Southern knocks off ranked App State again
For the first time since 2007, Georgia Southern left Boone, N.C. with a smile as it looked in the rearview mirror.
GSU took an early lead and was able to hold on for a 24-21 win over No. 20 Appalachian State in a huge Sun Belt showdown. Follow-ups coming Friday.

GMC College’s Juan David Herrera is the GCAA men’s soccer player of the year and David Sexton the top coach, and Annah Norman the women’s player of the year.
