Monday Daily News 'n Notes: Mercer BKB wins; Class A playoffs set; Monday AM QB; TD Club honors 3; and more

Monday's Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media.

Mercer men get past Kennesaw State

Ross Cummings returned for his season debut and scored 14 points off the bench to help Mercer to a 74-62 win over Kennesaw State in a battle of former Atlantic Sun Conference rivals.

Ethan Stair topped the 2-1 Bears with 21 points, Djordje Dimitrijevic adding a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The teams, who hadn’t met since Dec. 28, 2017, struggled on offense early until the Bears started finding their range for an 10-point lead in the first half to then take a 31-19 halftime lead.

The Owls were unable to get it to single digits.

Mercer hosts another former conference rival, and a higher level rival, when Florida Gulf Coast comes to Hawkins Arena Friday at 7:30 p.m.

GHSA Class A football pairings finalized

Mount de Sales is in, and Macon County is in. And they were joined officially on Monday in the GHSA Class A football playoffs.

One first-round game will be pretty interesting. Mark Farriba’s current team plays his last team.

No. 22 Stratford visits No. 11 Prince Avenue Christian, giving Farriba a chance to win his 200th game with a team he has coached for 11 years against a team he coached for six years. He is 79-50 at Stratford after going 42-26-1 at Prince Avenue, following a 78-51-2 mark at FPD in 11 seasons.

Mount de Sales has a bye, and No. 24 FPD travels to ninth-ranked Wesleyan.

Region champs automatically move up into the top eight spots and get first-round byes. Mount de Sales moved up from ninth to fifth, and Wesleyan slipped a spot to ninth.

Four other private schools ranked ahead of MdS also won titles: No. 3 Savannah Country Day, No. 4 Holy Innocents, No. 6 Athens Academy, and No. 7 Fellowship Christian.

No. 1 Eagle’s Landing Christian, No. 2 Darlington, No. 5 Christian Heritage, and No. 8 Wesleyan did not win their regions.

So the top five: Savannah Country Day, Holy Innocents, Athens Academy, Fellowship Christian, and Mount de Sales, followed by higher-ranked non-region champs ELCA, Darlington, and Christian Heritage getting first-round byes.

That would put Mount de Sales at No. 5, and a second-round game against the Hebron Christian-Mount Vernon winner.

In Class A Public, No. 19 Macon County travels to No. 14 Turner County and No. 24 Taylor County is at No. 9 Manchester.
