GHSA wrestling: Deductions keep West Laurens from state title (full Saturday results)

             Second place in a state activity is, naturally, something to be proud of and happy with.

            But West Laurens is unlikely to feel that way for awhile.

            The Raiders entered this week’s GHSA traditional wrestling state championship down a point from the sectional tournament. And during the four-day even at the Macon Coliseum, a wrestler lost a point for unsportsmanlike conduct and the coaching staff lost a point for unsportsmanlike conduct.

            Final score: Woodward Academy 169, West Laurens 166.5.

            The Raiders ended up pulling for a Perry wrestler as hard as a region rival can, in front of the capacity crowd.

            The Raiders needed some help at 195 in their hunt for the GHSA Class 4A traditional wrestling state title, and first in more than a decade.

            West Laurens took a 154.5-144 lead over Woodward entering Saturday’s finals. Woodward took it back and led 163-158.5 and extended it to 169-158.5 with Malcolm Wiley’s pin at 195 over Perry’s Zeke Taylor.

            That meant the Raiders pretty much needed falls at 220 by Chase Horne and 285 by Spencer Dacus to pull out the win.

            Horne won 8-2 and Dacus 4-1, to come up a few points short.

            Woodward had fewer wrestlers in the finals and consolation finals and needed every point and break, and got them.

            Horne and Dacus were joined by teammate Dre Bonner as individual champs.           

            Veterans finished third in 5A with 130 points, everybody chasing Woodland/Cartersville with 208.5.

            Francis Morrissey of Veterans completed the perfect season with a 9-8 win in 5A 152 to win the championship and improve to 61-0.

            Perry got a title from Austin Theil at 106.
