Tattnall picks a familiar name to take over girls basketball program

Tattnall’s new head girls basketball coach is oe who can maybe find his way to a local gym with his eyes closed.

After all, 43 years of coaching in Bibb County – with a stint at Houston County – means there’s little about basketball around here Casey Jones doesn’t know something about.

The school announced Tuesday at Jones will succeed Todd Whetsel, who is leaving at the end of the school year to take over the GICAA. Whetsel was replaced as athletics director last month by head baseball coach Joey Hiller, who also takes over officially at the end of the school year.

This is Jones’ second stint with Tattnall, to go with periods at Stratford, Central, FPD, and Houston County.

Most of Jones’ career has been as an assistant. At FPD, he filled in for two games leading the boys in the 2017 GHSA Class A public state tournament while then-head coach Michael Walton served a two-game suspension for an ejection during the region tournament.

And the Vikings won both games.

Jones coached the Stratford girls to a pair of GISA state titles, finishing second once and winning three region titles in the 1980s.
