Monday's Daily News 'n Notes: Houston County's Steiner on national stage; Braves; MGSU's Burgess signs with Baltimore; Mercer XC, Coastal league, and more

Monday's Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media.

Houston County’s Steiner set for The Opening

Yet again, Houston County has a representative at “The Opening”, a high school football showcase and competition held at different locations around the county, culminating in a quarterback competition.

Senior linebacker Wesley Steiner will be competing Wednesday in Frisco, Texas, part of Team Driplomats. Former quarterback Jake Fromm was part of the quarterback event.

Steiner’s stock is already pretty high. He’s a four-star athlete, according to 247 Sports, and is a top-75 national recruit. He has narrowed his list, as of May 23, to Georgia Tech, Auburn, Stanford, and LSU.

He was an All-Region running back in 1-6A in 2017 and linebacker in 2018.

Steiner is one of 14 Georgians competing: McEachern receiver Javon Baker, Valdosta receiver Jaheim Bell, Callaway back Cartavious Bigsby, McEachern defensive tackle Jamil Burroughs, Denmark wideout Ze’Vian Capers, Marietta tight end Arik Gilbert, Troup wideout Kobe Hudson, Marietta defensive end BJ Ojulari, Darlington offensive tackle Tate Rutledge, Columbia defensive lineman Nazir Stackhouse, Milton guard Paul Tchio, Lanier linebacker Phillip Webb, and Athens Academy linebacker Len’Neth Whithead.

He earned a high rating in combine-type competition Monday night, unofficially the top finisher in the U.S. Air Force Special Ops Combine Challenge.

Action will be televised Wednesday starting at 8 p.m. on ESPNU.

Mercer names new cross country coach

Mercer dipped into the junior college ranks and picked Josh Hayman as its new cross country head coach.

Hayman was the National Junior College Athletic Association Atlantic and Region X coach of the year in 2017 and 2018 at Louisburg (N.C.), earning top-10 rankings.

He was acting cross country and distance (track) coach at Louisiana-Monroe of the Sun Belt while finishing graduate studies. Hayman coached several All-Sun Belt athletes in the distances, and the ULM women had their best finish in six years at the conference meet.

The Delaware native ran at Syracuse.
