Tuesday's Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media.

Day 1 of Cephus trial complete

The first day of Quintez Cephus’ trial in Madison, Wisc. on sexual assault charges included a contradiction on whether a threesome had been organized by one of the alleged victims, and varying allowance of the introduction of text messages.

One of the two accusers as well as police officer from the University of Wisconsin as well as the city of Madison took the stand, both offering descriptions of an accusers demeanor on the night of the alleged assaults in April of 2018.

A Facebook page to help raise funds for his defense has been started.

Here is a collection of stories from assorted regional media outlets (some may be updated late Tuesday night):

          Wisconsin State Journal

Mercer trio makes the cut

Three Mercer women’s golfers survived some shaky rounds to make the cut of the Ladies National Golf Association Amateur Championship in Tennessee.

As of 9:30 p.m., the leaderboard was inexplicably very incomplete. The LNGA website had no report of weather delays, and it’s Twitter account hadn’t been touched since 11:20 a.m., so click on the link to see updates.

The projected cut at that point was 10 over, and 64 players.

Rutland grad Carol Pyon shot a first-round 77, and was listed at 1-over through 13 for Tuesday’s round, putting her in a tie for 37th.

Lauren Lightfritz made a huge jump, slicing eight strokes off with a 69 to reach the top 25 with a 146.

Payton Schanen went in the other direction with a six-stroke change to fall 8-under at 150 and in a tie for 45th.

Karoline Storm of Kent, Ohio leads with a 134.

Braves Report

Atlanta gave up six runs in the final two innings, but held on for an 11-8 win over Washington.

Julio Teheran got the win for the Braves, who led 9-0 after four innings.

Adam Duvall went 4 fo 5 with three runs and two RBI. Ender Inciarte and Ozzie Albies had three hits each.
