Contradictory testimony offered at Cephus trial

Former teammate Danny Davis and a female friend testified Thursday in the sexual assault trial of Quintez Cephus in Madison, Wisc.

Davis took a picture of one of the accusers and Cephus on the night of the alleged assaults in April of 2018, and deleted it at the request of the woman. He said taking the picture was a mistake.

Davis testified that one of the women was “full aware” of her surroundings, etc., before the incident, and that neither alleged victim appeared to be as intoxicated as they’ve stated.

There continue to be inconsistencies regarding levels of intoxication and the interpretations of assorted text messages. A third girl testified that one of the accusers appeared to be flirting with Cephus earlier in the evening

A decision as to whether Cephus will testify hasn’t been announced. The judge denied a defense motion to dismiss the case after the prosecution rested on Thursday.

 Braves Report

A three-run first held for the rest of the night, Atlanta winning 4-1 in a game called after seven because of rain that wouldn’t go away until an off day.

Those three came on Freddie Freeman’s homer, his 26th of the season.

Around/About Central Georgia

Macon starts and finishes strong enough

Macon scored one in the first and three in the third and watched that 4-0 lead evaporate with Lexington County’s sixth.

But that was all the home team got as Macon responded en route to an 8-6 road win in Coastal Plain action.

Daniel Harris led Macon with a 3-for-3 night, while Brandon Ashy had two RBI.

Lexington County was doubled up in hits, 8-4, but made lift tough with five errors that aided in giving up six unearned runs.

Macon hosts Savannah Friday in the Bacon’s final regular-season home game.

Pyon finishes strong in national amateur

Rutland grad and Mercer sophomore Carol Pyon shot one of the 14 final rounds of par or better to finish in a tie for 20th in the Ladies National Golf Association national amateur in Tennessee.

Her 71 was her best score in the four-round tournament, Pyon’s week marred only by a first-round 77.

Mercer teammate Payton Schanen finished with a 298, tying for 34th after a final-round 73. Lauren Lightfritz ended up tied for 48th with a 302 and a final round of 76.

Karoline Stormo of Kent, Ohio held on to a strong lead and won by seven shots with a 14-under 270.

Wesleyan bringing volleyball back

After a short sabbatical, Wesleyan is restoring volleyball to its athletics program.

Former player Malae Fiaseu led the team through a club season last year, and will remain as head coach when the sport is fully funded for the 2020 season, after another club season.
