Legendary Vidalia coach dies

There are only a few coaches who are connected to their school so strongly that mentioning the coach’s name is the same as mentioning the school.

Such was the case with Chunk Reid and Vidalia.

He spent 51 years at the school, most as the girls basketball coach, becoming the state’s career wins leader in girls basketball with 881 wins.

Then he was the AD for nearly two dozen years, in charge as the general athletics program won 16 state titles to go with loads of region titles.

The school, as well as scores of former players, fans, supporters and coaches are in mourning after his death Monday at the age of 75.

He announced in April his resignation as athletics director, effective at the end of the school year, two years after leaving the sideline, and health concerns were the primary reason.

The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame member Reid also coached softball.

Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home in Vidalia is in charge of services.
