Games of the week
Howard at FPD
The good news for the home team is that this is very unlikely going to be a 36-point margin this year. Howard comes in off a somewhat humbling win, and doesn’t have quite the firepower of last year, and FPD is a little better than a year ago. But the Huskies still have a speed edge.
The TSR pick: Howard by 19
Peach County at Northside (Saturday)
Two teams in transition dazzled a capacity crowd at Five Star a year ago, and both went on to state championship games. One was a surprise, one wasn’t. Northside is in something of a transition year again, and Peach County is as loaded as it’s been in a long, long time. The Trojans may be playing for revenge this season even against teams they beat with the lone goal of returning to the Do, er, championship game.
The TSR pick: Peach County by 14
Rutland at Hawkinsville
Note to any Rutland adults heading to Hawkinsville: make sure your phones/camera have space and are charged. You’re likely to have the opportunity to capture something that hasn’t happened in nearly two-dozen games: The Hurricanes dancing onto the field after a win. That’s if, of course, Rutland simply plays smart and disciplined – not exactly a longstanding tradition – and with a short memory after subpar plays.
The TSR pick: Rutland by 4
The Matchups
Central at Houston County
It was clear that Houston County was improved, but a 31- point win over anybody is big. Central was off last week, so we just don’t know. Can the Chargers come out and be in pretty much midseason form in the opener, on the road, against a decent passing team with a much-improved quarterback?
The TSR pick: Houston County by 27
Jackson at Mary Persons
When was the last time Mary Persons lost to a team that didn’t make the playoffs the year before? To a team that had a losing record the year before? To a team that managed two wins the year before? Can Jackson break the six-game losing streak?
The TSR pick: Mary Persons by 13
Jones County at Baldwin
From the run-happy Golden Hawks and an 11 p.m.-ish kickoff to the pass-oriented-but-balanced Greyhounds. We learned last year not to overlook Baldwin, but not for awhile. This has a familiar feel.
The TSR pick: Jones County by 24
