HSFB 2019: Who’s going to win this week’s football games?

Last week: 23-8
Season: 76-16, 82.6 pct.
Within 7 points of margin: 7, perfect on Brentw00d-John Hancock; 15 for the season
Upset specials: 0-1

Games of the week
Howard at Westside
Last year’s game was a disaster as far as fundamentals and discipline goes, with officials icing down elbows and shoulders from heaving so many flags. It was absurd. Howard is becoming more balanced in its wing-T, and defensive consistency has been a Westside issue. The Huskies can eat some clock, though, too. First team that can go 10 straight plays without a penalty wins.
TSR Pick: Howard by 8

Monroe at Perry
This sure won’t be any rerun of Perry’s 43-0 win last year on the road. But expect the Panthers to have made improvements after a not-very-sharp performance in losing by 20 at Westside. The Tornadoes scoring offense is down and scoring defense is up.
TSR pick: Perry by 6

 Dodge County at Appling County
The Indians have gone deep into seasons undefeated only to fall fairly flat in the postseason. Last week broke an eight-game regular-season non-region winning streak, and it was no doubt a wakeup call on both sides of the ball. Dodge County rarely needs wakeup calls. It was a game that is very likely to make the Indians better the rest of the way.
TSR Pick: Dodge County by 3

Fitzgerald at Upson-Lee
The Knights have the same record as a year ago, despite some rebuilding. Fitzgerald is about normal. If the Knights can get a good home crowd behind them, the first 3-1 start since 4-0 in 2015 is a distinct possibility. But Upson-Lee has to clean up plenty of little things and get some consistency.
TSR Pick: Upson-Lee by 2

Holy Innocents at Rutland
The Hurricanes may have seemed to get worse with the 54-0 loss to Houston County after breaking the 23-game losing streak. Yes, a team that improved to 1-23 can need some humility. HI is off a win over a top-1o team.
TSR Pick: Holy Innocents by 15

Manchester vs. Northeast (Thompson, Saturday)
Northeast surprised Manchester last year for a big win. Manchester won’t be surprised this year.
TSR Pick: Manchester by 11

Mary Persons at Lovett
The Lions are at home for the third time this season, and one of those games was a 30-29 overtime win over Greater Atlanta Christian, a huge get for a team that has lost six straight in the series. The Bulldogs are nine points from being 0-3. The margin goes from 4 to 11 with Mary Persons likely not having Rico Harden (foot)

TSR Pick: Lovett by 11

Peach County at Houston County
The weekly goal for Peach County opponents the rest of the season – including Houston County, Mary Persons, and Westside – is to avoid a running clock in the fourth quarter. Defending 6A champ Lee County couldn’t do it. The hope for all those opponents is a flat Trojan team countered by just about perfect play. Both have to happen – and again, that’s just to avoid the running clock, or be within a play or a few seconds of it - because Peach County’s ‘A’ game is that good.
TSR Pick: Peach County by 29

Tattnall at Lincoln County
Lincoln County lost 57-0 a year ago to Abbeville, S.C., and 10-7 this year, a sign the Red Devils should be better than the 4-6 team of 2018. The Trojans are at about the same level as last year.
TSR Pick: Lincoln County by 17

Veterans at Statesboro
Dorian cancelled Statesboro’s second game, a probable win over 3A Liberty County, so the Blue Devils have had a week off. The Warhawks survived Baldwin again, and are replacing key players pretty well so far.
TSR Pick: Veterans by 16

Washington County at Greenbrier
Greenbrier have digressed, having given up 47 more points than a year ago after two games. The Golden Hawks can match last year’s 55-6 win.
TSR Pick: Washington County by 39
