Braves Report
Whoever had Sept. 14 as the date the Braves would clinch a playoff spot wins.
Not much suspense there. Nor was there any for the final few innings of Atlanta’s 10-1 win over Washington, the Braves scoring nine runs in the last three innings to blow open a pitchers duel.
Mike Foltynewicz was solid, with five strikeouts, one walk, one run, and four hits in six innings and 89 pitches. Sean Newcomb, Luke Jackson, and Tomlin followed and kept it going.
The magic number to take the division is four.
Nick Markakis went 4 for 5 with two RBI.
Ozzie Albies added three hits and Josh Donaldson two, with additional two-RBI nights from Ronald Acuna, Albies, and Austin Riley.
The joy was muted by Charlie Culberson taking a pitch under the eye on a bunt attempt in the four-run seventh. Manager Brian Snitker argued vehemently against the call of a strike, the umpire ruling that Culberson was squared to bunt.
The Braves won’t have an update until Sunday on Culberson, taken to the hospital. Snitker said the damage was done to the right orbital bones.
Next: Sunday, at Washington, 1:38 p.m., TBS/ FSSO; Tuesday, vs. Philadelphia, 7:20 p.m., FSSE; Wednesday, vs. Philadelphia, 7:20 p.m. FSSE/ESPN; Thursday, vs. Philadelphia, 12:10 p.m., FSSE/MLB; Friday, vs. San Francisco, 7:20 p.m., FSSO
