Mercer’s DeFeo gets big honor from alma mater

When Stephanie DeFeo talks to her Mercer softball team, the Bears are hearing from somebody who’s been there, and on a higher level.

Her alma mater is recognizing that.

DeFeo will be inducted into the Louisiana-Lafayette athletics Hall of Fame on Nov. 1.

She was an All-American three times during her career in Lafayette from 1994-97, at first base and designated hitter.

Her induction comes a year after her head coach, Yvette Girouard, went in. Girouard is also a member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame for her success at ULL – it was known as Southwestern Louisiana and USL back then – and LSU.

She joins Ike Taylor (football), Kathy Morton (softball), Pricilla Lima (volleyball), Jose Alvarez (baseball), men’s tennis doubles team Bret Garnett and Ashley Rhoney, plus the late Charles Lancon (track and administration), and the father-daughter duo of Jefferson and Leigh Henneseey (gymnastics).

The class will be honored at halftime of the Cajuns’ game on Nov. 2 against Texas State.

Braves Report

The Braves continued to struggle down the stretch, stranding eight and getting  a short and poor outing from Julio Teheran in a 9-6 loss to Kansas City.

Teheran couldn’t get out of the third, having given up six runs on six hits. Six pitchers followed, most doing fairly well.

Ozzie Albies had three hits and two RBI, Nick Markakis two hits and two RBI.

Ronald Acuna was yanked in the third inning as a precaution with hip tightness.
