Central Georgia’s only high school basketball schedule will be updated Monday.
Baldwin honors Lunsford with gym naming
Longtime basketball coach James Lunsford was the center of attention Sunday as scores of former players as well as fans, family, and friends gathered for another tribute.
This time, it was as Baldwin High named its gym after one of the state’s most veteran basketball coaches.
Lunsford passed the 800-win mark last spring, coming at GMC, where he’s been the boys head coach since the 2010-11 school year.
He led the Braves to the their only boys state title, in 1981. He is a member of the Albany State Alumni Sports Hall of Fame, and has earned scores of region and state honors.
Lunsford coached at Baldwin for 31 years, and then at Twiggs County for two before taking over at GMC, with a record at the time, according to a Union-Recorder story on the hire, of 512-161.
An estimate of more than 200 players under Lunsford’s coaching earned chances to play college basketball.
