Around/About Central Georgia

Playoff implications await Thursday night games

A Region 3-AA and two Region 4-4A games are on the Thursday schedule, and all three are relevant to the playoffs, some more than others.

Bleckley County has lost two straight, and fallen from No. 4 to No. 9, and into fourth place. But the Royals remain a heavy favorite over Southwest in their regular-season finale for the game at Ed DeFore. The Patriots, who have been out of postseason contention for weeks, have yet to cross the 100-point mark for the season.

A Royals win puts Bleckley County at 4-2 in region play and seals at least fourth place, while keep it in the running for third and perhaps a second-place finish and home game. The Royals are in the playoff regardless, winning any tiebreaker with fifth-place Lamar County (4-5/2-3) because of a 30-0 win over the Trojans.

Westside (3-3/1-2) visits Spalding (1-7/1-3) and Rutland (1-5/0-3) is at West Laurens (3-4/2-2) in 4-4A play, Thursday games because Westside and Rutland play on Monday.

The Jaguars won their first region game since 2017 a few weeks ago, the last year they made the playoffs. Westside clinches a playoff spot with a win, with Monday’s game then having seeding implications.

West Laurens has clinched a playoff spot, their sixth in the last seven seasons, a program best run, by far. The Raiders lost two, won three, and have lost two straight.

Next week, Westside hosts West Laurens with, most likely, the winner getting third.
