Mercer men roll in opener
Ross Cummings, Neftali Alvarez, and Leon Ayers III each had 15 points and Maciej Bender 14 as Mercer rolled past Division II North Georgia 79-48 Wednesday in the season opener at Hawkins Arena.
Mercer shot 51.7 percent from the floor and took a 49-30 rebound advantage. The Bears had one more assist than turnover, while the Nighthawks had twice as many turnovers as assists.
Felipe Haase had 15 rebounds and was two points from a double-double. Alvarez had six assists, but seven turnovers.
Mercer’s lead was only 36-29 at halftime, but the Bears marched out in the second half and the lead grew to 30.
The Bears visit Georgia Tech Friday night, on Fox Sports South.
Georgia gets best of Mercer women
A 60.4-percent shooting night lifted Georgia over Mercer in the season opener at Hawkins Arena.
The Bulldogs hadn’t shot that well since 2009 against Kentucky, making 32 of 53.
“First of all, I want to say that I am so grateful we got to play today,” head coach Joni Taylor said. “There were a lot of games cancelled, and our hearts go out to everyone during this time.
“As far as the game, it was great to see us score in transition like that. We had a few more turnovers than we would have liked, but we will get that corrected. It was just a great effort from our team tonight.”
Georgia led 7-0 early and 43-29 at halftime.
Georgia is really good, and we really dug ourselves a hole in the first quarter,” said Mercer head coach and Georgia alum Susie Gardner. “We played decently in the second and third quarters when we cut it to 10, and we had opportunities but we just couldn't get stops.”
Amoria Neal-Tysor led Mercer with 22 points, 12 on 3-pointers. Jada Lewis added 12 in her Mercer debut.
Georgia plays at Georgia Tech on Sunday. Mercer hosts Tennessee State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
