Mercer knocks off Georgia Tech

The visiting Bears trailed for all of about 30 seconds early on and never trailed again in beating Georgia Tech 83-73 Friday night at McCamish Pavilion.

Mercer led by a max of 19 inside the final two minutes, and was up by double figures most of the final 10 minutes. Tech had slight advantages in paint scoring and second-chance points, but was outscored by seven from the bench.

The Bears hit 48 percent from 3, led by Felipe Haase’s 5-for-11 night en route to 17 points. Neftali Alvarez also had 17 points on a 10-of-11 night from the line. Ross Cummings added 16 on 5-of-7 shooting, 3-of 4 from three, and James Glisson III 14.

Mercer had 22 assists to 10 turnovers, while Tech had one more assist than turnover. The Bears played seven, to nine for the Jackets.

Moses Wright led Tech with 20 points, the Jackets shooting only 38.2 percent in the second half.

It was Mercer’s first power 5 win since 2015’s 69-66 overtime win over Arkansas.

The Bears host Georgia State – a four-overtime winner Wednesday over Tech – on Monday.
