Henley racks up top-10 finish

Russell Henley has had an inconsistent season so far, but he put together his second straight quality performance and finished tied for eighth in the Honda Classic.

That follows a tie for 17th two weeks earlier in the Genesis Invitational, which followed missing five straight cuts.

Even on short weekends, Henley has shot pretty well, with only a 5-over two rounds at the Sony Open in Hawaii leaving a bad taste.

Henley recorded rounds 70, 69, 70, and 69 for a 278 at the Honda, only two under in a tournament of fairly high scores and a field of few highly ranked players, but only four strokes back of winner Sungjae Im.

Bogeys have been a problem this season for Henley, disrupting several good rounds otherwise. This time, he suffered only eight bogeys in four rounds, and countered them with a double eagle and 12 birdies.

He finished tied for 20th at the Honda last year, five years after winning it.

Up next on the tour is the Arnold Palmer Invitational this week in Orlando, and then the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.

Alumni Update

FPD alum Garrett West threw his first career no-hitter Saturday, leading Berry to a 12-1 win over Oglethorpe.

The sophomore gave Berry its first no-hitter since 1999. That one? His uncle Shelby, against Shorter.

West improved to 2-2 after striking out four and walking three. The run was unearned. …

Mary Persons grad Cam Holden and Warner Robins’ Jacolbey Owens were named to the Florida College System Activities Association Athletics’ Panhandle Conference first team.

Teammate Maurice Gordon, a sophomore from FPD who made the second team, hit a game-winning shot at the buzzer on Feb. 22 for a 108-107 triple-overtime win to send Gulf Coast State to the state tournament for the first time in 11 years.

Gordon had 22 points and 10 rebounds, Owens had 21 points and eight assists in the game, Holden 24.

The trio led a turnaround from a season that was followed by a coaching change, last-place finish, and a season that started with road trips for the first month. …

Stratford’s Mary Wilson Avant teamed with Amanda Ablan to no-hit Western Carolina in five innings, an 8-0 Georgia softball win.
