Willingham grad, former Southwest and Windsor coach was 76, service Sunday
Jimmy Hammond played for Billy Henderson at Willingham, and then coached at his alma mater, Lanier, Southwest, Windsor, and Southeast.
The 2008 inductee into the Macon Sports Hall of Fame died last month in Huntsville, Ala., at the age of 76.
A memorial service will be be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Mart’s Mortuary at the Cupola on Peake Rd. The family will greet visitors an hour beforehand, and burial is at Rose Hill.
Hammond graduated from Willingham in 1962 and started for three years at Tennessee-Martin, earning his Masters from Memphis State.
Hammond was head coach at Southeast from 1988-95, Windsor in 1980, and at Southwest from 1973-77. He went 29-20-1 at Southwest and 11-1 at Windsor, and 9-71 at Southwest.
He was the older brother of Ronnie Hammond, the longtime lead singer of the Atlanta Rhythm Section, who died in 2001.
He is survived by children in Alabama and Tennessee, and grandchildren in those state, Florida, Texas, and Macon, and four siblings, including brother Steve in Juliette and sister Fay in Quitman.
