Scoreboard

High School

Softball

Tattnall 5, ELCA 2

Kaitlyn Hallman, Grace Hiller, Hailey Daughtry, and Olivia Bridger had two-hit games for the Trojans, Daughtry with two RBI and throwing a five-hitter, and Hallman with two runs.

Warner Robins 13, Howard 5

The Demons were down 5-0, but scored 13 straight in the fourth and fifth innings, added by some of Howard’s nine errors. Megan Sharpe had four RBI for Howard.

Westfield 4, John Milledge 0

The Hornets got seven hits, four RBI and two runs from the top three in the lineup: Sadie Hayes, Ellie Williams, and Marena Knowles. Sydney Langdon fanned nine in the complete-game six-hitter.

Peach County 2, Americus-Sumter 0 (25-10, 25-16); Peach County 2, Mary Persons 0 (25-23, 25-15)

College

Peach State College Football

Syracuse 37, Georgia Tech 20

Jeff Sims threw four interceptions to nullify a 96-yard advantage in total offense as Tech was in a 17-0 hole early and couldn’t get over a three-point deficit hump in the third quarter in an upgraded Carrier Dome.

Tech ran 19 more plays than Syracuse, but the four picks, a lost fumble, and 15 penalties for 104 yards were fatal.

Box score

Former Dublin standout Steve Linton had three tackles and a fumble recovery for Syracuse.

Former Dooly County standout and Florida transfer Antonneous Clayton finally made his Tech debut, and had two tackles.

Quez Jackson (Peach County) had six tackles and one TFL, Djimon Brooks (Washington County) had four tackles and two QB hurries, and Tobias Oliver (Northside) didn’t register any stats.

Louisiana 20, Georgia Southern 18

Houston County grad Darion Anderson caught a conversion pass from Shai Werts to give GSU a 20-18 lead with 54 seconds left.

But Louisiana got into barely enough position for Nate Snyder – who had missed two field goals – to drill a 53-yarder as time expired to keep the ranked Cajuns ranked and undefeated.

The Eagles led 7-0 and 10-7 before trailing 17-10, and taking the lead on Werts 28-yard scoring pass to K Hood and then the conversion.

Box score

Veterans grad Java’n Singletary had a huge game, with eight tackles, a hurry, and a breakup, the latter in the end zone on the play that forced the game-winning field goal try.

Anderson caught one pass for 11 yards in addition to the conversion catch. Northside alum Caleb Kelly played on the offensive line.

Georgia 37,  Arkansas 10

So, about this Stetson Bennett kid that has “The Mailman” as a nickname and was called a beast by Mel Tucker?

Yeah, he kinda might shatter some of that recruiting ranking guessing, since No. 4 Georgia relied on the walk-on-turned-JC transfer-turned-returnee to overcome a sloppy first half and pull away from Arkansas.

As expected by the free world that didn’t spend weeks guessing about the obvious, D’Wan Mathis got the start at quarterback, but struggled from the start. Bennett, who started out at Georgia in 2017 but left for a year at a junior college to get actual snaps before returning to sit last year, showed all the poise and confidence of the four- and five-stars he sat behind.

He went 20 of 29 for 211 yards and two scores, and had 20 yards on five carries. Mathis finished 8 for 17 with a pick and two sacks.

The Bulldogs looked like a major upset victim throughout the first half, but started to take over in the third quarter and pulled away.

The Bulldogs ran a staggering 89 plays, albeit for only 387 yards, 22 more plays and only 107 more yards than the Razorback.

Box score

Peach County grad Kearis Jackson had a game, with a team-high six catches for 62 yards, plus two punt returns. Mary Persons alum Malik Herring was credited with a tackle, while early stats had Upson-Lee’s Travon Walker shut out.
