Games of the week
Mary Persons, 1-5/1-3, at LaGrange, 5-2/4-1
Thanks to the forfeits from using an ineligible player, Mary Persons has a bad record. But there’s no doubt the Bulldogs are the best 1-5 team in the state, considering in reality they’re basically a 4-2 team. So this game is more one of two playoff teams in terms of quality. It’s a stretch, but Mary Persons can win two or three of its final four and have a shot to squeeze into the playoffs. It’ll take the Bulldogs’ best game of the year so far to get this one.
TSR pick: LaGrange by 11 (Upset watch)
No. 6 Northeast, 5-1/5-0, at No. 2T Dublin, 6-0/5-0
This game being delayed helps Northeast somewhat, giving the Raiders even more time to prepare for the Wing-T, and more time to work on drastically improving fundamentals and the mental discipline needed to have any success against it. The Raiders may have a size and speed advantage that’ll mean little if they can’t play with discipline and fundamentals and avoid a flurry of penalties. Dublin doesn’t much waste the mistakes of the opponent.
TSR pick: Dublin by 18
Stratford, 6-2/1-1, at Tattnall Square, 5-1/1-0
Neither team comes in very happy, which means it was likely a physical week of work. Stratford needs a better physical effort, and some tweaks to improve the passing game in case Tattnall can match FPD’s success last week against the run. Tattnall has to tighten up, well, everything after staggering past Mount de Sales last week. If either team plays like last week, it’ll be a struggle. If both do, it’ll be an unattractive slugfest that goes down to the wire. But it’ll be a slugfest, won by whoever slows down the opposing playamaker (Tyler Stephens for Stratford, Antone Johnson for Tattnall) the best and doesn’t make the big fourth-quarter mistake.
TSR pick: Stratford by 4
