Baylor goes Dublin Irish

Two former Dublin football standouts plan to reunite on the college level.

JaQues Evans and Steve Linton have both decided that their next college is Baylor.

In four seasons at Western Kentucky, Evans had 182 tackles, 19 for loss and 12 sacks, battling through an injury-filled 2023 that ended after six games, and after being named preseason Conference USA defensive Player of the Year. He led the Hilltoppers in tackles as a sophomore.

Linton spent four seasons and Syracuse and one at Texas Tech. The 6-5, 235-pound end played in eight games last year with the Red Raiders, getting 22 tackles and 3 sacks. In five seasons, he has started two of 37 games.

Bibb County athletes honored with Al Lucas Memorial Scholarhips

Athletes from Bibb County’s six public schools were rewarded Tuesday with this year’s Al Lucas Memorial Scholarships.

The honorees: Kadmiel Mensah & Jayme Heath of Northeast, Nikell Mikell of Southwest, Silas Risper of Westside, Joshua Vinson of Rutland, Lillian Harper of Howard, and JaMyiah Harris of Central.

The program is in its 19th year. Lucas’ widow De’Shanda is a part of the yearly ceremony, along with his parents David and Elaine.

Character, grades, leadership skills, and a caring attitude are among the requirements to be considered.

The graduate of Northeast and Troy died on April 10, 2005, from a spinal cord injury suffered during an Arena game. He played for the Los Angeles Avengers.

The Buck Buchanan Award winner as I-AA’s top defensive player signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and also played with Carolina.

Each year, a male and female from his high school alma mater are given scholarships. They are $1,000. Five more go to a student from the other Bibb County public high schools.
