Central Georgia is off to a nice start in the GHSA state track and field championships through the state, with seven state titles on day one.

Class 6A and A/I are in Rome, 5A in Carrollton, 4A and 3A in Albany, AA and A/II in Commerce.

Weather delayed the start in some locations, and Classes 3A and 4A in Albany will start on Friday.

Hawkinsville had a day, taking home two state champions.

Ethan Rogers and Erin Johnson took the pole vault titles in Class A/Division II. Johnson won the girls trophy by four inches and Rogers was tied with Declan Ekkel from Schley County with an 11-6, but won on the tiebreaker.

Ella Gibbs of Bleckley County won another state title, in the Class A/I 3,200, defending her title. She’ll try for another 1,600-meter championship.

Mary Persons’ Van Tane won the boys 3A shot title with a throw of 52-5.

Aaron Davis of ACE took the long jump in Class AA boys with a leap of 22-5.5.

Nasir Johnson of Dublin grabbed the Class A/Division I discus with a 170-10, after finishing fifth last year  behind brother Ramontei Dardy. His mark broke the Class A record of 168-1 set by Jordan Pickerel of Athens Christian in 2013.

Julian Council of GMC Prep was first in the Class A/Division II boys 3,200-meter by 10 seconds. He’ll try to defend his 1,600 title, and add to cross country hardware.

Peach County’s Brandon Michaels tied for third in the Class AAA boys high jump with a mark of 6-4.  Putnam County’s Allan Hill was third in the AA boys long jump.

Caleb Jackson of East Laurens tied Prince Avenue’s Christian Garrett for first in the A/I shot, but Jackson got second on the tiebreaker. Bleckley County’s Caleb Darsey took third in the A/I boys 3,200

The girls teams from Mary Persons, Bleckley County, and Hawkinsville as well as the boys from GMC Prep are in the top five in their respective classifications.
