Mercer’s Jacobs to speak at Macon TD Club
Second-year Mercer head coach Mike Jacobs is Monday’s speaker at the Macon Touchdown Club.
The club meets at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, in the Rumford Center, at 304 Pierce Ave. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and the program to begin around 7. Admission for non-members is $30. Membership for the year is $250.
Podcaster Josh Pate is next week’s speaker, followed by Georgia Southern’s Clay Helton on Oct. 27.
Mercer improved to 5-1 with Saturday’s 38-14 win at Princeton, the Bears racking up at least 500 yards in offense for the second straight week.
The Bears were ranked 25th and 19th in the two major FCS polls, and have been ranked all season. They’re off this week, and return home against VMI on Oct. 25.
Jacobs, now 16-4 at Mercer, was hired January of 2024 to succeed Drew Cronic, who went 28-17 in four seasons and moved on to the offensive coordinator job at Navy. Jacobs succeeded Cronic at Lenoir-Rhyne, and went 32-9, part of his 74-17 career mark at L-R and Notre Dame (Ohio).
A three-time coach-of-the-year winner, he was the national coach of the year in2018 by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette.
He took over a program at Notre Dame in Ohio that was a women’s college for about 80 years before admitting men and then starting football. He took over four years in.
Jacobs was an offensive lineman at Ohio State for John Cooper and Jim Tressel, and has coached at Eastern Michigan, Wilmington (Ohio), Purdue and California (Pa.), before accepting a position as the defensive line coach at Notre Dame in time for the 2014 season.
The Bears have several Central Georgians on the roster: 9 WR/KR Brayden Smith, Tattnall, Jr.; 16 QB Jake Maxwell, Veterans, Fr.; 23 WR Travion Solomon, Northeast, Jr.; 26 CB Tucker Mix, Jones County, Jr.; 54 DL Justin Brett, Washington County, Jr.; 72 OL Michael Horton, Westside, Fr.
