Longtime Stratford baseball coach Adams dies

His first name was Elton, like his father, but to scores of Maconites, he was always Bubber.

The Stratford baseball complex carries his name, and the Eagles and local baseball community are mourning the death Friday of Bubber Adams.

He passed away at his home after an illness at the age of 80.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Macon Memorial Park Cemetary on Mercer University Drive.

The Lanier High alum graduated from Mercer and got his Masters at Georgia College.

He started helping out the new Stratford program while in college, and took it over two years after its inception, in 1969.

Adams kept his place in the dugout for 33 years, covering five decades. Most of the time, his right-hand man was Bobby Hendley, also a Lanier and Mercer grad. After Hendley’s pro baseball career – highlighted by throwing a one-hitter and losing when Sandy Koufax threw a perfect game in 1965 – ended, he returned to Macon and eventually ended up with Adams.

They teamed up to send dozens of players to the college level and a few to the pros.

Adams retired from baseball coaching with a 553-158 record and nine GISA state titles, earning seven state coach of the yer honors.

He became Stratford’s director of alumni affairs. The school named the baseball complex after him in 2012 when he fully retired, adding Hendley’s name to the field.

Adams joined the Macon Hall of Fame in 2005, four years after Hendley’s induction.

He is survived by Cheryl, his wife of 41 years.

Two seniors and a junior are the latest Macon Touchdown Club players of the week.

Back: Senior quarterback Chase Dupree of Southwest completed 13 of 27 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 80 yards and a score in the Patriots 35-21 loss to ACE.

Lineman: ACE junior linebacker Huck Thompson piled up 14 tackles, two for loss with a sack and interception in the Gryphons’ 35-21 win over Southwest.

Special teams: Windsor senior kicker Santiago Medina picked up 19 yards on a fake punt, had two special-teams tackles, hit a Pat and 27-yard field goal in the Knights’ 26-14 win over Central Fellowship.

Podcaster Pate to speak at Macon Touchdown Club

College football podcaster Josh Pate is Monday night’s speaker at the Macon Touchdown Club.

The club meets at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, in the Rumford Center, at 304 Pierce Ave. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and the program to begin around 7. Admission for non-members is $30. Membership for the year is $250.

Georgia Southern’s Clay Helton is next week’s speaker, followed by ESPN/SEC host Dari Nowkah and then Jeff Monken of Army.

Pate, a Columbus native, was a TV sports director in his hometown, eventually moving into online hosting, first with 247Sports. He now hosts “Josh Pates College Football Show” online with On3/Rivals and is a recruiting analyst with ESPN.
