Callaway 26, Westside 0
Callaway got all it needed with a short touchdown run after a big punt return four minutes into the game. The Cavs went up two scores midway through the second quarter and added a pick-6 less than a minute later for a 19-0 halftime lead. Westside (1-6, 0-2)) suffered its first shutout to a Georgia team since falling 45-0 to Perry in 2021.

Jasper County 21, McNair 18
McNair turned in its best game of the season, and Jasper County needed a 61-yard touchdown pass from freshman Waiker Sands to Dee Pennamon with five minutes left to get the lead for good. McNair went up 8-0, Jasper County answering with two scores, on Chance Ross’s run and a pass from Sands to Pennamon. Jasper County is 7-0 for the first time since 1988 when it went 11-1, the lone loss coming in the state region playoff against Dacula, who the Hurricanes had beaten 26-15 in the regular season. Head coach Ashley Henderson (24-17) has tied Doug Huff (24-60) for seventh on the program wins list.

Jefferson County 27, Central 12
For the second straight year, Jefferson County got past Central in the battle of winless teams.

Mercer hosting “Hatcher Family Reunion” Saturday

Well, not officially, but there will be Hatchers – and many others sharing blood but not the last name – galore at Five Star Stadium when Samford visits Mercer in Southern Conference football.

The Bulldogs are off to one of the worst starts in Chris Hatcher’s coaching career, 0-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

As bad as the record is is the margin of defeat. The closest loss is 15 points, at Western Carolina three weeks ago, and the Bulldogs are off a 31-13 loss at home to Furman.

Samford leads the series 7-4 and is 2-3 at Mercer. The Bulldogs rolled 55-35 last year, but opened the season with only on offensive and three defensive starters back, plus more freshmen – 54 than grads, seniors, and juniors (37).

“We’re not far off,” Hatcher said earlier this week in a media meeting. “I know I say that every week . I really believe that, but we’ve got to play better in critical situations.

“That’s plagued us the entire season.”

Hatcher is 61-55 in his 11th year at Samford, 182-112 in his 26th season overall. And now, they face the defending Southern Conference champion.

“And they’re playing like it,” Hatcher said. “They don’t give you whole lot of different looks (on defense), they’re just really, really good at what they do.

“Those guys, they know how to win.”

Hatcher may stay in town with family after the game, since he’s the speaker on Monday night at the Macon Touchdown Club.
The Bulldogs have several Central Georgians on the roster: Veterans wideout Preston Bird, Putnam County cornerback Malik Thornton, offensive lineman Web Davidson of Tattnall, and ACE wideout Brice Whitley.

Bird is second with 29 catches and 280 yards, Thornton is seventh with 15 tackles. Davidson has played in five games, and Whitley is currently on the redshirt list.
