Around/About Central Georgia

Four Thursday night Central Georgia games

One of the top games in the state will light up the farmland of Dexter on Thursday when West Laurens hosts Westside-Augusta in a showdown of undefeated teams in Class AAA.

Just to the west, Bleckley County hosts Central in a Class A/Division I game. Upson-Lee visits LaGrange in 3A and Crawford County heads to Chattahoochee County in 6-A/II play.

The pride and bragging rights on the line between the Raiders and Patriots are huge.

West Laurens (9-0/7-0 3-AAA) has never had a perfect regular season, and Westside’s last one of three in its history was in 1982.

They’re both enjoying a quality run after recent struggles. Westside (9-0/7-0) went 8-42 from 2015-2019 and is on its fourth head coach since then.

West Laurens started the Kip Burdette era going 3-17, the program’s worst run since 2002-03, and is now on its best two-year stretch 2001-02..

The Patriots will focus on slowing down Ty Cummings, who is 156 yards from 2,000 for the season and has 24 rushing touchdowns, and forced the Raiders to pass, which they’ve done only 58 times all season.

Cummings’ lowest numbers this year came in blowouts over Groves, Cross Creek, and Hephzibah, when he carried a total of 18 times. In competitive games, 159 yards on 23 carries against Richmond Academy is his lowest total.

West Laurens had attempted more than 10 passes only twice, 13 in the win over Richmond Academy (21-7) and 11 against Harlem (26-21). It was 1 of 4 in last week’s 49-42 win over Aquinas.

The Patriots are more balanced, with 117.6 yards passing – 113 more yard than West Laurens – and 230.7 yards rushing.

Both teams are in the top five of the Postseason Rankings and will be at home in the first round.

It’s Senior Night in Cochran as the Royals (7-2/6-2, 4-A/II) play for their second eight-win regular season in three years and fourth under ninth-year head coach and alum Von Lassiter.

Landy Nobles’ 8.3 tackles a game and Tug Pasby’s 16 tackles for loss lead a Bleckley County defense giving up 16.7 points a game, on target for a the best average under Lassiter.

The Royals’ starters will get some rest entering the playoffs unless Central comes up with its best game in awhile as the Chargers try to avoid a second straight 0-10 season. The Royals won 56-0 last year.

Upson-Lee (4-5/3-4) is in must-win mode and needs help to squeeze into the AAA playoffs. The Knights enter the game a few spots outside of the 32-team field as an at-large possibility.

And they’ll have to beat a ranked team for the first time this season, LaGrange tied for sixth in the Georgia High School Football Daily’s composite rankings.

LaGrange’s five-game winning streak was stopped two weeks ago in a 38-24 loss to Troup, and the Grangers were off last week while Upson-Lee was being upset 34-7 by Trinity Christian, the Knights’ worst loss of the year, by 27 to a lower-ranked team.

Crawford County and Chattahoochee County will have a full-fledged playoff atmostphere, since the winner goes to the playoffs and the loser goes to basketball.

          They’re both  4-5 and 2-3.

The Eagles are on a w-w-l-l-w-w run while the Panthers have won three of their last four games.

Crawford County is getting 4.67 more points a game than the opposition. Chattahoochee County gets outscored by 6.4 points a game, but the closest loss is 27-6 to Mt. Zion in the season opener.

Crawford County won 17-7 last year.
