GHSA reclassification committee hearing appeals

The next step in the GHSA’s reclassification process takes place on Monday when the committee charge of reworking things hears more than 50 appeals at its office in Thomaston.

Where will Central Georgia high schools be in the GHSA in 2026-28? First round of reclassification numbers are out, but there's more movement to come

Monday’s part of the process involves schools appealing their placement in one of six classifications.

There has already been a little movement with eight schools appealing to move up a classification, thus leading to the smallest schools in that classification dropping down.

It’s affected only two Central Georgia teams. Movement has pushed Mary Persons from being the smallest 5A school to among the biggest 4A programs, and Jasper County from 3A to AA.

Area teams and the classification they’re appealing to move from: Central from 5A, Westside and Howard from 4A, Washington County from 3A, and Twiggs County and Putnam County from AA.

Most if not all of the Central Georgia appeals are likely to be approved. After another round of appeals, the GHSA will place teams in regions and classifications.

Army’s Monken to speak at Macon TD Club

Army head coach Jeff Monken is Monday’s speaker at the Macon Touchdown Club.

The club meets at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, in the Rumford Center, at 304 Pierce Ave. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and the program to begin around 7. Cost is $30 for non-members.

Longtime coach Will Muschamp is next week’s speaker.

Army is having a solid season in Monken’s 11th at West Point at 5-4. The Black Knights beat Temple 14-13 on Saturday and are off before hosting Tulsa on Nov. 22.

Monken is 87-61 in his 12h season at Army.

He was 38-16 in four seasons as head coach at Georgia Southern, including a win at Florida. He coached under Paul Johnson at Georgia Southern, Navy and Georgia Tech.

Monken, a Joliet, Illinois native, graduated from Millikin and was a grad assistant at Hawaii and Arizona State before starting his career at Buffalo. He followed with two seasons in high school and then joined Johnson at Georgia Southern in 2007.

Monken, who has a career record of 123-77, and wife Beth have three daughters. He is a cousin of former Georgia assistant Todd Monken.

Army has nearly a dozen players from Georgia, including freshman linebacker Xavier Ryan of Houston County.

Macon Touchdown Club picks two Vikings and an Eagle

Players from FPD and Stratford are the latest Macon Touchdown Club players of the week.

Back: Senior do-it-all Brady McHugh of FPD rushed 20 times for 93 yards and three touchdowns and caught six passes for 53 yards and a score, to go with 13 tackles and a pass breakup in the Vikings’ 42-7 win over Strong Rock.

Lineman: FPD junior linebacker Graham Moore racked p 12 tackles and added an interception in the win over Strong Rock.

Special teams: Stratford junior George Dunn averaged 48 yards per punt, and was perfect on 5 PAT kicks in the Eagles’ 37-21 playoff win over Calvary Christian.
