Middle Georgia State beats the buzzer and Blazers

Krishen Atwal drained an off-balance 3-pointer from the left wing to beat the buzzer and give Middle Georgia State a 96-95 win Wednesday night over visiting Valdosta State for the Knights’ first big win since joining Division II and the Peach Belt Conference this year. (Replay is here)

MGSU won its third straight, and hosts Mount Olive on Friday.

VSU led most of the game, but the second half was more back and forth, the Knights taking a 5-point lead but trailing 94-93 with four seconds left.

MGSU inbounded the ball twice, the final time with two seconds left, in front of the Knights’ bench with OT Delancy passing it in.

The game appeared to be over – the ball was still in the air when the red backboard light went on – and MGSU players and fans stormed the court.

But the celebration veered to the Valdosta State bench, and a few Blazers had to be restrained.

After a little more than five minutes meetings, officials stuck Middle Georgia State with a technical foul for leaving he bench, although it appeared to have happened after the horn, and thus after the game was over.

VSU’s MJ Jones went to the line and made the first one, but the second one was short, and this time, there were no punishments for the celebration, which came after Valdosta State had left the court.

Atwal led MGSU with 25 points. Upson-Lee grad Milique Smith added 13.
