Washington County dismisses Edwards
After four seasons and the longest playoff wins drought since the 1990s, Washington County’s school board dismissed head football coach Robert Edwards on Friday.
The Washington County alum departs with a 20-24 record, the first Golden Hawks’ coach to leave with a losing record after at least four seasons since Bill Upchurch went 11-22 from 1987-90.
The announcement came four years and a few days after Joel Ingram was “reassigned” after a 5-5 season, three seasons after a trip to the quarterfinals.
Superintendent Rickey Edmond made the move and hired Edwards, who was 32-11 at Riverwood, 29-37 at Greene County, and 15-7 at Arlington Christian.
Edmonds was fired from his job less than two years later, after the 2022-23 school year. Ingram has been on the staff at Dublin since.
The Golden Hawks never got any momentum going under Edwards, starting with the 4-7 season in 2022 that included losses of 42, 40, and 51.
It was the first time since 2017, a 5-8 season, in which the Golden Hawks gave up more points thanthey scored.
The record improved by a game a year later, but there were also losses of 40 and 28, but a competitive 25-14 playoff loss to ninth-ranked Cook.
Washington County went 6-5 in 2024, but couldn’t avoid the big losses, falling 42-9 to Northeast and 49-0 to Dublin on consecutive Fridays.
There was some progress in 2025 en route to a 5-6 mark, with only one bruising loss, 32-0 to Northeast.
Washington County joins Central and Westside as Central Georgia schools looking for head coaches.
