Around/About Central Georgia

Covenant making the move back to 11-man football

Everywhere Clint Humphrey looked, he saw schools just down the road he couldn’t play.

Covenant was playing in the 8-man division of the GIAA, surrounded by six Bibb County schools playing the 11-man game.

A larger roster in 2025 and some success plus increased interest among supporters has led Covenant to join its neighbors.

“We only had 14 players my first season,” the Rams’ head coach and athletics director said in an email. “We had 25 players this season. We were very pleased with the number of kids that came back out this year. I think that can be attributed to the success we had in '24 and parents seeing the vision and dedication our coaches gave my first season.”

Humphrey was hired late in the summer of 2024, and said parents weren’t sure if there would be a team. Stability led to more support and participation in 2025.

The Rams will be a GIAA Class A team when the 2026 season starts, its first season playing 11-man football since 2018.

The deadline for schools to declare their intention to participate in the GIAA was Monday, and it is scheduled to release its first draft of classifications and regions on Friday. Appeals are in early January.

The GIAA employs a different version of classifications and regions, combining classes for the regular season and then splitting them up for the postseason.

There were 14 teams in the combined Class AA/A for the regular season and they all made the postseason, 10 in AA and four in A.

The past two Covenant likely would’ve been in a region with Central Fellowship and Windsor, among others.

Windsor made a similar move recently and just completed its second season back in 11-man action.

The move also opens up the schedule to one of decreased travel.

“Our closest 8-man opponent was Crisp in Cordele,” Humphrey said in an e-mail. “We have traveled to Augusta, Bainbridge, Camilla, Atlanta, and Athens for games.

“The longest trip for us now will only 1.5 hours away in 11-man. Playing other local schools will give us the potential to have better attended games and improve our gate revenue.”

Covenant’s first season was in 2008, and it played 11-man football from 2008-2013 before moving to the Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association from 2014-18, winning a state title in 2015.

That young group folded and became GAPPS, Georgia Association of Private and Parochial Schools. Covenant competed in the GAPPS 8-man group for three years, with a title in 2021.

It joined the GIAA’s 8-man division in 2022.

Humphrey thinks the excitement is only starting.

“Our players have worked extremely hard,” he said. “They deserve to be recognized and acknowledged as a ‘real’ football team. 11-man football is what fans in Georgia know.

“We feel like the next step in the growth of our program is to move to 11-man.”
